There are two movies set in the Berner Oberland that are worth checking out. The "revolving restaurant" movie that james refers to is "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" and it was shot largely on location at Piz Gloria (the restaurant) and the lovely town of Muerren, where the tram to Piz Gloria (name of the mountain is the Schilthorn) leaves from. It's also the only movie where Bond was played by George Lazenby. We've skied (badly) the extremely challenging run down from Piz Gloria - aptly named The Inferno - that's featured in the movie.

The other one is the Clint Eastwood movie "The Eiger Sanction". Very good scenes of Kleine Scheidegg and the Eiger Nordwand restaurant, as well as the North Wall (Nordwand) of the Eiger itself. The ski runs down from Kleine Scheidegg are considerably less challenging than The Inferno.

Here are some real (reel?) oldies, all from the 1960s or 70s.

Switzerland:
Love and Bullets with Charles Bronson & Jill Ireland. It starts in the western US, but most of the action takes place in Zermatt, Montreux, & Geneva.

Assignment to Kill with Patrick ONeal & Joan Hackett. A few scenes from the Engadin (St Moritz maybe?), but most of the movie takes place in Zurich.

The Bourne Identity, the first one with Richard Chamberlain & Jacelyn Smith. Early scenes in Zurich and some countryside areas, then it moves to Paris.

The Mountain, with Spencer Tracy and Richard Wagner (unaccountably supposed to be brothers!). They say its supposed to be the French Alps, but the folks just looked Swiss to me . . . ???

Austria:
A Fine Pair with (and this is a truly strange coupling) Claudia Cardinale & Rock Hudson. Supposed to be in Kitzbuehel but it looked like Salzburg to me, then Rome.

The Double Man with Yul Brynner. Austrian Alps.

Where Eagles Dare with Richard Burton & Clint Eastwood. Filmed in Salzburg; the Fortress is supposed to be an inaccessible fortress high in the Austrian Alps.

Have fun!

s

"Heidi", the original one. It's in Swiss-German...

And for some reality, try "Bread & Chocolate", it's about immigrants making a go of it in Switzerland. Remember, there are always two sides to the coin: You will pass through some cities and graffitti-laced walls on your way to Alpine heaven.
