austria / switzerland itinery
 

thanks to your comments i have adjusted my trip for the better........but i still have questions......

arrive zurich...rent car
3 nights luzern........day trips to BO maybe bern
3 nights lugano/como./.bellagio
1 night....hall in tirol..... mid point to salzburg
3 nights salzburg...day trips to the lake region...sound of music tour...salzburg music festival...hallstatt.....
2 nights zurich 1 full day only.

2 nights ...open........could go to venice...? but lots of driving..... or wonder around southern austria? what about eastern switzerland /western austria? lichtenstein?

You do not want nor need a car until Lugano.
I would stay on Como--preferably Menaggio on the west shore.
Drive via the Engadine valley from Como to Landeck to Salzburg in one day---I hate one niters.
Stay in Fussen on your way back and see the castle.

thats a long day ....maybe 12 hours with stops ? what about the tirolean area of austria?

Why not spend 2 nights in Hall in Tirol and spend one day on Achensee. It's only about a half hour from Hall to Pertisau on Achensee. It's a lovely area; one that few Americans visit. We stayed in Maurach and drove over to Pertisau.

Or drive over to Wattens, just east of Hall, and visit the Swarovski's Crystal World.

Follow the sightseeing route via St. Moritz on www.viamichelin.com
Detour to Fuessen to see the Nechwanstein, Hohenschwangau and Linderhof, if there is time, (1 day 2 nights) and then go back to the sightseeing route via Linderhof, Oberammergau and Garmisch. It adds about 3 hrs to the drive time.
