Austria Road trip
 

I am planning a 8 days trip to Austria at end of may.
will arrive and depart from Vienna,
More interested in visiting countryside, assuming 2 days for Vienna i will have 6-7 days for sight seeing., will take a car rental.
Please can i get a few suggestions for the above topic.

The Michelin Green Guide often has itineraries at the beginning of guide for the number of days available.

Weatherwise I would focus on the Southern side of the Alps.
While you can never foresee the weather, it will be much more common that the Northern slopes, e.g. Salzburg, still get lots of rain while Carinthia is already almost like summer.
Keep in mind that the scenic north-south Alpine pass roads may still be closed. Especially the Grossglocker Alpine Road, which otherwise would be a "must" to drive.

The tourist information sites of Carinthia and Steiermark and East Tyrol should be a good starting point to get an idea what that region has to offer.

Klagenfurt, the state capital of Carinthia, is a pretty town. Nearby Hochosterwitz castle and St Veit monastery are prime sights.
Personally, I find the valleys "off the beaten track" west of Villach especially scenic. Like the Lesach valley along B111.
But that is maybe already a bit too far west for a 6 day loop drive.
For a touch of Alpine views, you could take the B95 via Bad Kleinkirchheim and Turracher Höhe. That road should be free (of snow, and also tolls), but you should always watch the signage locally for road conditions.

Closer to Vienna you will find Lake Neusiedl. You can drive around through a bit of Hungary.
The Wachau valley West of Vienna is also a nice area, though I find that especially nice in autumn for the wine season.

Anyway, there will be more than enough for 6-7 days to keep you entertained.

A beautiful spot just 1 & 1/2 hours west of Vienna is Gaming, at the base of the Alps and it has an 800 years old monastery. A pleasant day trip or one night overnight and then back to Vienna vis a stop at Melk.

Melk Abbey is a 'must see' as is the Durnstein area.

How about the lake region? St. Wolfgang or St. Gilgen?

Hallstatt is a gorgeous tiny village!

I also enjoyed the Piber Stud Farm and the Stift Rein Abbey.
