Austria help
 

Next May I'll have 4 days to travel Austria by car. Once I already know Vienna, which other places do you advise me to visit in Austria? Thanks, JP

Can't go wrong with Salzburg, the city of Mozart.

I agree with Salzburg. Hallstadt is a nice overnight and you can't go too wrong slipping across the border to Germany to Bretschgaden (sp). And while you are over there it is just a couple of hours up the autobahn to Munich.

The Wachau Valley, which follows the Danube from just outside Vienna to Melk, is very beautiful. Lots of hillside vinyards, castles, tiny villages, and some of the best bicycling in Europe.

Choose an itinerary that cannot be done otherwise. For example, you might want to see Kremsmunster and Wilhering rather than Melk since the last one is easily reached by train. You might also choose to choose a route that takes you high up in the Alps. In other words, I would not choose large cities easily reached by train as my destination if I intended to drive for four days.

Any of the areas aroiund Kitzbuhel, Elmau, St Johann would be terrific.

Kufstein has a great castle.

Also there is always the town of Heilengblut (Holy Blood). Spelling is probably wrong. There is a great legend about a monk travelling through Austria on the way back to Rome and ended up spilling the blood of Christ in this part of Austria.

Also the GrossGlockner Street to the Gross Glockner Mountian would make a great choice.

Have a great time. I always make the area of Ellmau a 4 day stop for all of my trips to Austria. Very nice, very few tourists.
