Booking a vehicle from Vienna to Salzburg--pick up on a Saturday return on the following Wednesday. Travelling down the Wachau, across to the lakes district at Salzkammergut,thence to Salzburg---Is this enough time to do the area justice. We are stopping wherever the mood and accommodation finds us. Any thoughts would be appreciated---Silksta

What time of year do you plan to travel?

Great time.. the most direct route from the Wachau to the Salzkammergut lakes region (via A1 motorway) is somewhat bland as it obviously avoids the mountains.
If you still have time to "waste" a day on the road, you could opt for a more Southern route through the mountains towards Hallstatt.

Thanks cowboy--would rather the scenic route,and we have a spare day as well.
