Austria

We have 3 nights to spend in Austria with 2 young kids. We plan to drive from Lake Bled into Austria and would try to cover the Alpine scenic road (Grossglockner). I need help deciding whether to stay in Salzburg or Zell Am See. If possible I also want to see Hallstatt. Given the agenda above, what would be a good itinerary for Austria. The kids are too young to do museums and other tours. We love light hiking and mountains.

Hallstatt and Salzburg have salt mines (which are really cool for kids).

Hallstatt also has a World Heritage trail back down to town from the salt mine.

Salzburg is truly beautiful. Never been to Zell am See (but I was told I shouldn't miss it)

Good luck and have a great trip!

Hi,

If wanting to drive the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse, I'd stay in Zell am See. We liked our stay at the Pension Alpenrose in 2009.

If looking to go directly to Hallstatt and have a night to spend on the way, I'd recommend a night in Ramsau am Dachstein and doing "Der Dachstein" cable car trip. It's incredible! Amazing scenery plus there's the Skywalk, Suspension Bridge and Ice Palace at the top. On top of all this, on the cable car itself, you can ride on TOP of the cable car on the "balcony" . We loved our stay in this area in Dec. 2013.
