Hi Brooke - good to see you're planning ahead, but you're probably setting yourself up for a mauling by some of the otherwise well-meaning old grizzlies here, for whom 'hostel' now means the next step in aged care. At this stage, my advice for what it's worth would be to scrounge or spend a few bucks on a selection of guide books - Lonely Planet, Rough Guide, & Let's Go would be good ones for you I'd imagine (they don't have to be current editions and local libraries often have copies for loan) - check out Contiki itineraries for clues, and hang out on Lonely Planet's Thorn Tree 'Europe' and 'Travel on a Shoestring' forums. When you have more specific questions I'm sure the fossils here will be glad to help out if they can.
These may be useful - http://www.yha.com.au/ http://www.hostelbookers.com/ http://www.hostelz.com/hostels-in/Western-Europe In my hostelling days I stayed mainly in YHA affiliated hostels; these days it appears there is a lot wider choice, but also wider standards. Have a great time! . |
Hi Broo,
>please let me know of some places that are good for partying.....< Please let us know of some places that you are visiting. :) ((I)) |
How long are you planning to travel for? I raise this issue because if you want to be in Schengen Agreement countries, most of Europe but not UK you can only stay for a total of 90 days within any 180 day period. This can be done in segments by going backwards and forwards from the UK. If you want to stay longer you need to arrange the appropriate visas in Australia. You cannot try to change this in Europe once you have arrived. Sorry to be a misery but you have the time to research the requirements and how it meets your plans. There is information on websites but it is somewhat impenetrable if you are not an immigration officer.
For lively places you might need to search on a younger forum. |
Sorry I hadn't read to the bottom I see you are only planning to be in Europe for 3 months so no problems.

have a look at some of the itineraries that contiki have
go to a travel agency and let them walk you through some of the types of accommodation contiki books then ditch the contiki and slow it right down lol i have heard that in amsterdam the flying pig hostel ( something like that) is good value stay away from formula one in amsterdam my son had to move out and hes no fancy pants couldnt stand it most aussies love croatia,,go on the getaway site and see if you can dig up some of the old archive videos catriona did a segment on hvar for instance - it is every bit as good as the presentation and it is cheaper than a lot of places in europe we stayed in apartments right in the old town for 75 aud a night stay away from scandinavia - will send you broke moscow is fun but i think you need to have a bit of experience as travellers to confidently tackle it without the language not a lot of hostels either and accomm is super expensive food is cheap though london is great pub scene but so expensive for aussies -youll cry my son loved portugal but he had a friend show him the good bits dont forget greece youd love santorini i havent been to mykonos but thats party island i hear greece is very generous with food portion so the boys order and the girls nibble off the plate plenty for all lol try not to do hot and cold climates in same trip hard to pack with the 20 kg limit dont fly into frankfurt boring and vienna is more for older people flying to london has problems0 higher taxes so check out amsterdam or get to rome have fun save hard euro is about double for us but it isnt unreasonable works out about the same if youshop in the supermarket ireland sounds like fun too and they love aussies however you have the same issue as all of uk with the money and our pathetic dollar |
What sort of music do you like? that will help with festivals and the like. If you are into dance music there is no point really in suggesting some of the major festivals, but there are plenty of dance events around too.
