Augustiner Keller

Aside from the beer, how is the food here? I am not a beer drinker but my husband is and wants to go to a beer hall. Thanks for the advice.

I assume you mean the one in Munich. The food is quite good German beer hall fare. It is reasonably priced, IMHO the beer is th best in Munich and it is where the Germans go rather than to the touristy Hofbrau Haus where drunk tourists can in fact ruin a good evening!

US

Bsrbara - for once I have to agree with US. Augustiner Kellar, I think has the best food of any large Keller in Munich and is certainly much less rauchous than the Hofbrau Haus. Entirely different experiences.

Their bavarian sampler dish is really good (worth the 14 euro). I'd try that. And see if you can get seated down in the lower area of the keller, it has a fun atmosphere.

Make sure you try their dark beer at least once, it makes a great dessert beer.

The prices were good, but I thought Augustiner Keller's portions were waaaaaayyyyyyy too big for one person! If you are not usually a big eater, you might want to order a plate to share.

I am also not a beer drinker. Do you like wine? Maybe you can go to Augustiner Keller one night and then Pfalzer Weinstube the next. I thought Pfalzer Weinstube's food was better.

Where in Munich is the Augustiner Keller located? Anyone.

uncle sam Jan 12th, 2003 06:47 PM

It is about three blocks form the Hauptbahnhof.

If you were to look at the front of the Hauuptbahnhof, then you would go up the sreet that is on the right hand side of the HB for about three blocks. It is just at the top of a rise on the right hand side of the street.

US

Augustinerkeller is located in main pedestrian street - rest of details as per uncle sam's email. Not as touristy as Hofbrauhaus but still pretty touristy given location. My preference is for much smaller pub (best rated n local Munich restaurant guides) - Andechs located on Weinstrasse behind the cathedral. Beer is regarded extremely highly - after all produced in the Church (in the Kloster south of Munich). As it so much smaller than the Augustiner, you will have to sit with others - so can get a proper Munich pub feel. Much more quaint. Food is very good - one of the best vegetarian meals I have had was there (and I am no vegetarian).
