August - Croatia, Italy, Malta
Hi everyone,
Currently trying to plan a trip for this summer once I'm done with the bar exam. Currently the plan is a trip for somewhere between 2 and 3 weeks (closer to 3) and to hit Croatia, Italy and Malta. But as I'm starting to plan I'm getting concerned that this isn't enough time to do all three. The original plan was to fly into Dubrovnik and out of Malta so it would be:
Dubrovnik: 2-3 nights
Split: 2 nights
Venice: 4 nights
Rome: 3-4 nights
Naples: 2 nights
Sicily: 1-2 nights
Malta: remaining time (my boyfriend's family lives there)
Is this way too rushed? What would you guys suggest instead? Should I take out Croatia? There's so much to see and I feel like I'm ripping myself off by hurrying through it. I could potentially add another week on but I'd have to consider costs. Thanks in advance for any advice!!

Impossible to do all that.
Absolutely forget Sicily for only 1-2 nights! You will spend more time getting there than being there and it is a place that you need a week or more to see even one side of the island.
It will be scorching hot in much of Italy, especially down to Naples.
I would not go so far South to Naples and not see Pompeii, but you need to do it early morning. Remember - scorching hot, little shade, no water. You must take some.

Yeh rest is OK if drop Sciliy whose sights are wide-spread and a day or too rather useless.
Can take ferries Split over to Italy and use trains there for cities as cars are useless and banned from many city centers. Book long-distance trains far in advance for nifty discounts - www.trenitalia.com - for lots on Italian trains check www.budgeteuropetravel.com; www.ricksteves.com and www.seat61.com - latter great info on booking discounted tickets.

Ancona has good train service to Venice and Rome.

Thank you guys for your advice! Was mainly considering Naples/Sicily as a Segway to malta but maybe we’ll just fly out of Rome and go straight there instead.
I was looking at the trains but I didn’t even think about ferrying from Croatia to Italy! Looks like that will save a decent amount of time and money as opposed to taking the train up to Zagreb and down to Italy.

Sorry to be blunt, but honestly, I would hate this itinerary. Of course it depends on what you want to see and experience, but IMO, you would be spending a disproportionate amount of your time and money in travel relative to the time you have to actually be in any of these wonderful places.
I agree with the recommendation to defer Sicily until you can give it at least 2 weeks (if note more). I'd say the same about Croatia.
Here's what I recommend: Get some good guidebooks (or spend some time with a few in your local library), identify the things you most want to see in each location, check their opening/closing times on the internet, and mark them on a calendar. Then pencil in your transportation, add some time on either side (for getting to/from your lodging, checking in/out, packing/unpacking, getting oriented, etc.). Then see how things fit together.
Good luck!

You have to make a choice:
either you spend a week or so in Croatia, go then by ferry (or Wednesday volotea flight) to Bari, spend a few days in Apulia and fly then (Sunday) to Malta
or
vist Northern and central Italy and fly then from Rome to Malta
or
spend most of your time south of Naples and in Sicily and proceed then by plane or catamaran to Malta
or
Visit Split and surroundings, proceed by ferry from Split to Ancona, fly with Volotea to Catania or Palermo, spend a week in Sicily and fly (or take a catamaran) to Malta
or
visit Croatia, fly to Rome, visit Rome, fly to Malta.
