Hi, my husband and I are celebrating our 10th anniversary in August and are looking to take a week's vacation. Any suggestions?

Too general a question to get much response here. Ask something more specific. Could go to a place like London and Paris for a week and do some day trips or go between London and Paris taking the Chunnel train in between. But the question is so openended hard to answer.

Please tell us a little more about your interests. Do you like museums, theatre, history or architecture? Or are you into nature, scenery, beaches, or hiking? Or something else?

Sorry for the open-ended question. We like sightseeing, museums, castles, not too into beaches, although outdoor/hiking is good. Don't want to go too far East, since we'd be traveling from NJ and don't want to waste too much time on a plane. We're just starting to think about it, which is why I can't be too specific at this point, but any help you can give would be appreciated.

If I were you, I'd go out for a nice meal on the day itself and put off your trip until mid to late September.

To get just about anywhere in Western Europe you should plan on an 8 hour flight at a minimum.

How about Munich...plenty to see, castles nearby and easily reachable, hiking possibilities narby also.

I'd fly to Munich, but rent an apartment in Garmisch for a week and get a car. You can visit more castles than you need to and hike to your heart's content. Stretching the week with a weekend at either end, you should be able to still sneak in two nights in Munich itself.

Castles-schmastles. Go for the scenic splendor, fresh air and hiking fabulosity in the mountains of Switzerland. Or some romance on the Italian Lakes. My 2 cents...

for Hiking, I'd say go to Northern England/Scotland. Edinburgh is nice, great castle.

You can go down to York for some smaller but nice museums, walk the city wall.

Hadrians wall stems across north england from outside Newcastle, lots of hiking on/by the wall and a few roman fort ruins

August = Alps, in my book, and in my experience.

The Swiss end of Lago Maggiore has it all; the warmth, enthusiasm and great food and wine of Italy, the splendor and beauty of Swiss mountains and a gorgeous lake, the castles of Bellinzona, the hiking trails in the Centovalli, easy transportation, and reasonable prices. Plenty of romance to be found there.

August in Edinburgh is when most of the festivals are on & it is very crowded. I love it, but if you want a quiet romantic holiday it's not the best time to come. Touring the rest of Scotland for the scenery, castles, hiking, etc might suit - others on this board, notably Sheila, could help you with a good itinerary.

For our 20th Last august my wife and I had 5 lovely days in Prague.
However its a long way to go from NJ for a week, I would suggest something a little closer to home.

Have you ever been to Europe? If not, I would spend half in London and half in rural Scotland, hiking. Easy flight and cooler than southern Europe in August. As Oldie says, if you can, have a nice dinner on your anniversary and put off your trip until late September. In late September, I would go to Paris and then spend a bit of time hiking in the Loire.
