Attire

I will be in the Greek Isles in June. What should I wear? (During the day) Is there a proper attire that is worn by the locals?

It's hot in the islands in June. Wear lightweight cotton clothing. The locals do the same. If you're a widow you can wear a black dress, black shoes and black shawl.;)

Good one, Lee.

Cdowden, during the day locals are busy working, and dress accordingly. Visitors, who greatly outnumber the locals during the summer, dress for leisure activites. Shorts, t-shirt, and sandals are the most popular attire.

You didn't ask, but in the evenings long sleeves and trousers are advisable, for both the cooler temperatures and to ward off the mosquitos.

My husband & I were in Greece for the last 2 weeks of June & 1st week of July 2004 (Athens + 6 islands). We wore shorts & short sleeved shirts (or dresses/skirts at night for me) every day. I brought a cardigan sweater--I think I wore it once or twice. I'm sure noone mistook us for locals, but I never felt out of place. The weather was over 30 C every day; we found it (pleasantly) hot but giggled as we watched Greeks walk by us in jeans and long sleeved shirts. A waitress told us one night "good thing you came when it's cool, it gets REALLY hot in August".

Wear what you do in the summer at home. Yes August is stifling. I was there in a heatwave a few years back 40c And would have walked starkers if I could yt was so warm. In corfu town we were waering bikkini tops and shorts. I am not a person who would normally do this or wear a Tshirt over but we were sick from the heat and many others dressed the same. We of course covered up for visiting a church!
