Atocha train station and surrounding area

I am going to be in madrid on thursday the 25th of this month. Is it common in that area for people to be walking luggage down the street? My hotel is about a half a mile away from the atocha station.
Thank you.

I LUGGED over 100 lbs of luggage down the streets and through subways during the day (ill never pack that much again!!) but to answer your question I did it and I saw many people with there luggage walking to thier hotels. I felt pretty safe doing it too... although only a fool would try to run with as much luggage as I had they would end up with a hernia before getting to far :)

there will be no problem with you draging your luggage, but cabs are not that expencive.

Of course it's doable, but is it wise to drag suitcases for 1/2 mile on the streets of Madrid? In case you haven't been to Madrid-Atocha area, it is crowded, uneven sidewalks at times. Be kinder to yourself and your luggage and spring for the cab fare.

Do yourself a favor and take a taxi...it won't kill you, money-wise...less than the cost of that CD you just bought much less the creams and potions.
