re: the issue about whether you pay or not at a UK ATM.

Banks don't charge, and these are by far the majority of ATMs you will see, as hole-in-the wall machines everywhere.

Free standing machines often do charge as these are privately operated and positoned in places you don't find a bank (inside small shops and pubs mostly - not outdoors), but don't get scared that you'll be confused - all ATM machines that do charge have signs all over them telling you that they charge, and include on screen prompts warning you that if you press 'x' button, you will be charged (usually £1.50 - not exactly enough to 'break the bank' LOL)
