ATM's in France - Buy Euro's at Home?

Last year we were able to use our credit cards all over the Netherlands, but when we hit Germany (Dortmund area), they were not readily accepted and we had trouble locating ATM's when our Euro's ran low.

Should we bring Euro's along that we buy at home before we leave?

Are credit cards freely accpeted in France? We are on a tour to Paris, Deauville, Mont St Michel, Loire Valley, Normandy, Tours...

Can we expect convenient ATM's in the towns on the this trip?

I am really perplexed. We were so embarassed that we could not use credit cards in the small towns of Germany to treat our German hosts to meals and admissions.

Linda

Are you limiting yourself to certain bank's ATMs?..
I've never had any problems using MasterCard or Visa credit cards, nor finding an ATM to withdraw cash using my debit cards, anywhere in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, Switzerland or Italy.

I can understand small establishments wanting cash payments, but I can't imagine not being able to find an ATM.

I believe that there is a preference for cash instead of credit cards in restaurants in Germany (and some in Switzerland, in my experience), but that is not the case in France. Any town with a bank will have an ATM.

My wife & I spend 2 months in France almost every year. We quite often spend time in small towns in non-touristy & somewhat remote areas - like the Auvergne & Ardeche. We never have trouble getting cash from an ATM. However, we always carry about 300E with us to Eueope when we leave home.

IS it less expensive to buy Euro's at home or use the ATM's for the Euro's?

Using the ATM is less expensive, especially if your bank does not add any of its own charges to the transaction. BofA does, but my credit union does not--the same applies to my credit card. It may be worth it to look around, depending on how long you intend to travel and how much you intend to spend.

On average, it will cost you about 6-9% more to buy euro in the U.S., plus a possible shipping charge.
