ATM Pin Numbers
I read that the ATM machines in Europe only allow for a 4 digit pin number. Mine is five digits. Is this a problem, if so, what do I do about it. We leave on the 11th.

Contact your bank now and ask about changing to a 4 digit PIN. Or maybe there is another way around it-just check with your bank.
|
I have found them to be 4 digit pin, contact your finacial institution and ask them, you should be able to get it changed.
|
Once when we were in Europe, my husband had 5 and it would not work...Thank goodness I had my card with a 4 digit pin..Make sure to change it well before you go.

Som people say the first 4 numbers will work. I wouldn't chance it. I think you have to physically go into your bank with picture ID to change the #. See the customer service people. Also make sure you're using #s not letters (like on a phone dial) because the European machines don't necessarily have letters.
On another thread, someone suggested asking for an ATM only card (if your exisitng ATM card is also a debit card) in case of theft. Probably a wise idea as long as you're in the bank. |
I do not understand the rationale for changing from an ATM/Debit card to an ATM only card because one is going to use it in a European ATM...why???
|
Bootman: the reason some people advise using a straight ATM card instead of a debit card is if you were to lose a debit card anyone could use it as a Visa card and have direct access into your checking account. But that is the same situation in the States - as long as you notify the issuer you are only liable for $50 of fraudulent purchases.
(But it is easier to deal with the bank/issuer from home instead of dealing with the time differences etc from overseas) Actually I have been considering changing both of my debit cards to ATM-only - but not because of a trip to Europe. Haven't decided yet - A debit card is so convenient, but there are drawbacks. |
You need 4 digits (and numerals not letters because the keypads aren't necessarily the same). If your bank can't get it changed in time, I would plan on another means of getting cash (i.e., carry US cash to exchange &/or travelers checks).

Hi,
Yur bank should be able to change your pin number for you overnight (mine did). If not, ask them to issue you another card and tell them what pin number you want to use. |
