ATM machines in Turkey
Can anyone please tell me about using ATM machines in Turkey? Are there lots of bank machines around to use? any problems with the number of digits in your security code?
I've heard some banks will only take a certain number of digits in the security codes. If bank machines are not a great option to use, what have you used for money while travelling? Travellers cheques seem to be a very old method and not all that readily cashable. Thank you for your help. |
ATMs are everywhere. I had no problem with my 4 digit code.

Had no problem finding ATMs anywhere...even small villages.
Doubt anyone would know what to do with a traveller's cheque - are they still being sold? |
If your card is with a bank that is part of a network (e.g., mine is part of the CIRRUS), you can check on-line in advance to find ATMs that will accept your card and what kind of PIN you will need. For example, see this link:

Never had a problem..But we have a 4 digit pin which you may need.

Since it was our first time in Turkey, we used an ATM (found everywhere) connected to a bank. (In case the ATM ate our card, we wanted to be able to contact the bank right then.) Anyway, there were no problems at all, but we did go into the bank after we got our TL and asked them to exchange some of the large bills for smaller ones (so we could buy tokens for the tram). They were happy to do this for us.

whenever possible in Turkey or elsewhere, ask for withdrawals that are odd amounts in local currency so you get some small bills |
Thank you all for your replies. Very helpful
