ATM limits
In Venice last year, the ATM's had a Euro 200 limit. We need much more than that for our Barcelona apartment rental, has anyone had a problem getting that amount of money out of an ATM? Thanks!

It's what your local bank allowed in my understand
contact them and folks have reported that they could arrange then more don't think european ATMs make that decision. |
I would ask the bank to increase the daily limit (and why). You could also get some Euros before you leave. It is also likely this limit is per ATM - going to another down the street is sometimes an option. You could also take some out one day, more then next, etc. - but it's easier to ask for an increase or get some ahead of time :)

The ATM may have a limit PER TRANSACTION but there's nothing stopping you putting the card in again or using another ATM - assuming of course you bank has given you a limit higher than €200

Most banks have a $500 per day limit. Remember it's dollars not Euros. The daily limit resets usually at midnight local at the banks headquarters so you can sometimes get two withdrawels within an hour if you straddle the time zone correctly.
Some banks/accounts have higher daily limits and some have lower. It's important to know your limit before you go. If the ATM has a limit. Cancel the transaction and find another ATM. I don't want to pay two transaction fees because a particular ATM imposes a limit lower than my bank's. |
I am having the same concern - most ATM's do give you an option to enter in the amount you want but sometimes you can't. Some have a 500E option, others only 200E. The part about calling the bank ahead of time is an easy-do but I hope I don't have to make multiple withdrawals since each time I am hit with a tranaction fee. Hopefully I will find an ATM at the BCN airport where I can get 700E. It must be something that other visitors do manage for the apartment rentals - there are lots of apartment enthusiasts so I decided to give it a try.

Recently was in Spain, and I have a BoA ATM card. My limit was €300. Didn't try it more than once a day to see if I could get more.

I did not find a 200 euro ATM limit on my November 2007 visit to Venice. I was able to withdraw more than that.
I have found that often if I type in a higher number than any of the automatic choices, the ATM will not allow the transaction. (This may have been because of a limit set by my own bank, but I never researched this.) So now I usually choose the highest automatic choice and have had no problem getting euros from any ATM in Italy. Since my bank does not charge a transaction fee, this is no problem for me. |
Remember you're maximum daily ATM withdrawal limit is NOT a calender day limit but a 24hr limit.
