Athens Taxi

Hi

I wrote on another thread about helping a friend with a trip to Greece. This question is about taking a taxi from the airport to their hotel in Athens.

Because my friend is disabled, they won't be using public transportation. My question is this: should they book a taxi ahead of time, securing a rate, or rely on the taxis at the airport?

Thanks.

We used George The Taxi Driver and they were outstanding! I booked him months ahead of time and confirmed shortly before we left for Greece. Met us at the airport with our name on a sign and gave us a mini tour on our way to the hotel. We also had Michael (from George's company) for a half day tour and he was fantastic. Very knowlegeable about Athens as he is a native. I had also forgotten my electric rollers (a disaster for me) and he took us all around Athens looking to purchase some. Cannot speak highly enough about the company and their people.

Instead of relying on a random taxi at the airport, they can go to a tourist information service desk in the airport for assistance. That way the rate will be secured and the transfer will be trouble-free. One possible source of assistance would be Amphitrion Holidays, which has a travel desk in the Main Hall between Exit/Entry doors 2&3.

The average Taxi fare from the airport into Central Athens will be around 40 euro plus possible baggage handling fees., between 6 AM and Midnight. After Midnight that will double.

Thank you both. I am going to write to both agencies tomorrow, as we are still working on securing a day tour, as well as the taxi.

Tuscan:

I found George on this site from the many people who sang his praises and I agree with all of them.

Absolutely George the taxi driver..Had a remarkable ride with one of his drivers when I arrived in athens last May. My daughter and her 2 children did also 2 weeks before me. His service is very good..Not cheap but nothing is in Greece. It was not possible to book early and after the kids used him I went on the internet and got reserved easily..Asked for and got a discount as a senior.. not much but everything helps..Have a wonderful time!!!

I took a taxi from Athens Airport last summer to the Intercontinental Hotel, which is not too far from Syntagma Square. The fare was 33 euros.

I also took at taxi from the Intercontiental to the airport and the fare was 32 euros.

None of the taxi drivers charged me for bags and I had absolutely NO PROBLEM getting a taxi to and from the Athens Airport.

to "Amer_can" who said "Not cheap, but nothing is, in Greece."

!! Maybe not, for people who sign up immediately for the most-promoted services, without checking around.

Thingorjus is absolutely right about no problem, 30 to 35E to one's hotel by day --- I think you can pay 60€ or more for the same trip by one of "George's" fleet of taxis. ANd what for?

Hi

There is a well organised ramp for registered taxis as you exit the airport. Taxis are plentiful and there is no waiting. There is absolutely no need for expensive alternatives unless your friend requires a modified vehicle or likes a bit more style.

We just got back from Greece last night (and hopefully will find time to finish my trip report shortly). We used Athens One several times (including a couple of trips to/from the airport) to pre-arrange a taxi and had very good luck with them - friendly, knowledgeable drivers, on time, great service. The airport fares were in the E32-35 from/to central Athens (including handling lots of luggage in one instance).
