Athens: Plaka or Constitution SQ.- where should I stay?

I know both areas are in walking distance of one another, but I'm having trouble whether I want to be closer to the Acropolis or to the scents of the bakeries and restaurants in the Plaka. Any advice?

The Acropolis is closer to the Plaka than to Constitution (Syntagma) Square.

Syndagma and the start of Plaka are about 0.3 mile apart. In other words, the differences between the two locations are pretty insignficant in terms of convenience. My advice would be to look in both areas and find the hotel that best meets your needs and stay there.

You could also split the difference. For example, the Cypria Hotel, while slightly closer to Syntagma, is located between the two locations, and is a decent, reasonably-priced place to stay. The Amazon Hotel is another value hotel that is midway between the two locations.

In 1998, I stayed at the Grande Bretagne on Syntagma Sq. It was only a short walk to the Plaka.

And if you can afford the Grande Bretagne, it's a wonderful place to stay. I love it and wish I had the means to stay there every time!

Thanks everyone for your help. I didn't know the Acropolis was closer to the Plaka than to Constitution Square. I will definitely stay in the Plaka. Thanks again!
