Athens One Night - Advice re Hotel

My husband and I will be returning from Santorini to Athens on a flight that arrives in Athens at about 7 p.m. on Monday May 25. We are flying out from Athens on Tuesday morning on an 11 a.m. flight. Should we stay in a hotel near the airport and go into the city for the evening or should we stay in the Plaka district and go to the airport in the morning?

I have no idea which is better. Either way, which hotel would you suggest? And also, what could we do in the city for just a few hours? (obviously dinner - and also, which is a great restaurant with a great view - but besides that, would there be time for anything?). It will be our first time in Athens, albeit a real quickie.

thanks!

As you don't have a really early am flight out I would go into Athens, at least you can then wander around Plaka in the evening & see the Acropolis all lit up. Staying close to the airport may be more convenient, but nothing to do or see with the time you have. What's your budget for that night (in Euros)? There's lot's of hotels to choose from close to, or in, Plaka & handy for easy access to transport to/from the airport.

I would stay in Athens and take a taxi to the airport in the morning. The taxi should be about 35 euros.

If you decide you don't want to deal with Athens you can stay at Peri's Hotel out near the airport. They offer a free shuttle between 7am and 11pm.

There's also the St. Thomas B&B. You will be responsible for your own transport to and from the airport but they'll assist you and feed you.

Have you stayed at Peri's before?
I was considering a chain hotel near the airport but I might look into rates at Peri's now. Thanks :)

No, I haven't stayed there but here's a review I just found:

thanks to all.

My budget is somewhere around 100-150 E. We're coming from a pretty expensive hotel in Santorini so I'm trying to be more reasonable in Athens, especially since we're only sleeping there, having breakfast and leaving. The Attalos and Acropolis View Hotel were suggested and the price is great, but they received pretty mixed reviews, especially the AVH which people called dumpy and old. I don't need fancy - just clean, modern and in a great location. (with a great breakfast too!)

thanks

A friend and I stayed at the Athens Gate Hotel in Athens in October. Our room faced the Temple of Zeus; others face the Parthenon. We ate in their roof top restaurant several times and had a great view of the Parthenon. It is within walking distance of the Plaka. I don't remember the price, but both of us said we would gladly stay there again. A good breakfast was included in the rate.

We stayed at the Hotel Plaka during the Olympics and it was just fine - clean and modern. Good view of the Acropolis from the roof terrace and close to all the activity in that area without being too noisy. Definitely in your budget.

Hi

Maybe try the Adrian Hotel - http://www.douros-hotels.com/view_hotels.asp?hotel_id=2. Located in the Plaka a room with Acropolis view is E155.
