Athens hotels and must sees

We will be staying in Athens for 2 nights in June, 2006 after a 7 night Windstar cruise. We are thinking of staying at either the Golden Tulip or the Intercontinental. Looking for feedback on either hotel. Also, what are the must sees in the 2 days we'll have in Athens. Thanks.

What's your budget? Hotel Grande Bretagne is the best property, and it is superb.

Acropolis is THE sight to see.

That hotel is a bit steep for our budget. Will we miss something very special if our hotel doesn't have views of the Acropolis at night?

No. You can see the Acropolis from various points in and around the Plaka, and if you feel like it you can walk up the hill at night. A room with a view is nice but not necessary.

I also suggest you try to make it up Lycabettus Hill on the funicular for a drink at sunset over the city. Spectacular.

To clarify, I meant you can walk up the Acropolis to the Parthenon at night.
