Athens hotel: Plaka Hotel or Amazon Hotel?
We plan to spend several days in Athens, in October and would appreciate it if anyone who has stayed at either of these hotels would offer feedback. Thanks

Hi, my friends and I stayed at the Plaka Hotel a few years back. It was in a good area: the Plaka area..around a lot of restaurants, stores, and we had a view of the Acropolis from our room. It was a very plain room. We returned a couple of years ago and stayed in a different hotel which was in the Monastariki area and just a few short yards to the Monastariki station...a lot of stores around there. Have you gone to www.mattbarrett.com If you are budget minded, he gives you where to stay, eat, visit....I forgot the name of the hotel which was on a street with hardware stores, kiosks of all kinds, restaurants, etc. He recommended the Cecil Hotel and another one and the other one is where we stayed. It was reasonable enough for each of (4 ladies) to have our own room but that was before the dollar/euro situation.
You can even email him (like I did) if you have a question and he will answer right away. He gives places for eating, drinking, shopping, etc. I can't praise his site enough because it was so helpful. We didn't use Rick Steves, Frommers, or Fodors. We used Matt Barrett. He even gave us a lot of information on the ferries, islands, etc. Enjoy your trip. Mary |
Hi, I looked up the hotel where we stayed on our last trip to Athens. It was the Attalos Hotel in Monastariki area.

I'm sorry to keep bothering you but the correct website for Matt Barrett is www.greektravel.com
Enjoy your trip. Mary |
I stayed at the Amazon in early May this year. My stay was enjoyable... some rooms smallish and all bathrooms small but the hotel is clean and well kept and only steps from Syntagma Square and the metro and just steps in the other direction from the Plaka. I happened to walk past the Attalos one day and preferred the location of the Amazon. I can't comment on the breakfast because I rarely eat in a hotel breakfast room. I much prefer an outdoor cafe. If you can, try to get room 607 for it's great view of the Acropolis. Rob |
Thanks for your advice everyone. We chose the Amazon Hotel. It looked good, and the price was right. Thanks Rob!

Margo - I spent more time researching hotels and it was a toss up between the Plaka and the Amazon. I decided on the Amazon as well and will be there in sept. I will post a report but I am sure it will be just fine. We asked an old University friend who lives in Athens and he said they were both good hotels as far as location (clean and safe) etc. Good value for the money.

MargoLargo, You're welcome. The Amazon is actually on tiny Pendelis Street just off Mitropoleos but you'll see the sign. There's a tiny old chapel across the street they had to build a modern building around. Watch the rug shop next to the hotel entrance... they have a guard cat who often sits by the door after hours. The In Town Cafe across Mitropoleos is a good place for a beer and something to eat after a hot day of sightseeing. And Anastasia at the Amazon desk is a sweetheart... be sure to ask her for room 607! Rob |
Thanks again Rob...thanks Traveller69. Your input is greatly appreciated.
