Athens Hotel on Syntagma Square
We are looking for a hotel in Athens on Syntagma Square very close to the bus stop for the E95 airport shuttle. We will only be spending one night there and will be spending most of the day sightseeing, so we just want something clean and a good price (no more than 100 euros). Any suggestions? Also, I can't quite figure out - how far of a walking distance is Syntagma Square to the Acropolis and to the Plaka? Thanks!

The Amazon.

Thanks for the suggestion, but The Amazon is sold out. Ugh. Any other suggestions?

I always stay at the Adonis. Not sure if it's up to Fodorite standards though.

The Pan, Cypria and Hermes are all pretty close to Syntagma Square.

Last year we got the Intercontinal Athens for $100 US on Priceline. They are not on the square, but they have a free shuttle that goes back and forth several times a day. Our room there was wonderful.

The Athens Gate fits the bill exactly. Try to get the 7th floor.

Check the Arethusa and Metropolis.

Isn't Athens Gate far from Syntagma? I thought it was close to the Acropolis...
But I may be confused.... |
Hi
Syntagma is an excellent location. Easy walking to Plaka and the Acropolis. When are you going - 100E in off season goes further. Try http://www.astorhotel.gr http://www.athenscypria.com |
The Athens Gate isn't on Syntagma.
When you come off the E95 and face the square, the Arethusa is about a 2 minute walk along the street down the left hand side of the square, the Astor a 2 minute walk down the street to the right of the square. Both are in great locations. I've used both but if I had to recommend one it would probably be the Astor. Bill |
Thank you everyone for your suggestions! When I began looking at these hotels, a lot were already sold out (we'll be there the night of Monday, May 26th). On a whim, I went through Hotels.com and tried The Amazon again, and they had it, so that's what I went with. It was a bit more than I wanted to spend - 112 Euros - but the reviews are good and I think we'll be happy there. Now I'm trying to figure out walking directions from the Syntagma Square bus stop to the Amazon. I'll check out the communitywalk.com website you recommended and see if that will assist me. Thanks!

Becca-
It couldn't be easier to find the Amazon, it's very close. I believe you can actually see it from the bus stop. The Syntagma Bus Stop is on Othonos Street, alongside Syntagma Square. Walk downslope to the corner, cross the intersection and Othonos turns into Mitropoleos Street. The Amazon is at #19 Mitropoleos, so it's only a few minutes from the bus stop. |
I wonder if we are talking about the same hotel. I contacted the Amazon, and they just responded that it's a 5 minute walk from the Square, off of Mitropoleos on Pendelis Street. I would have liked a closer hotel - something right there at the bus stop so we didn't have to carry luggage so far - but I can deal with a five minute walk.

Pendelis St. is only about 2.5 blocks from the bus stop. I think it's on the corner of Mitropoleos and Pendelis.
Now that I'm thinking about it, the Arethusa is the one you can see from the bus stop, and the Pan is less than a block further on down Mitropoleos. |
Now I'm wondering if I should change to the Arethusa if it's closer to Syntagma Square. It's $40 cheaper than the Amazon.

Hello? I stayed at the Intercontinental this July and there WERE TIMES THE SHUTTLE DID NOT RUN.
If there is any kind of demonstration in the city of Athens, the Intercontinental shuttle does not run because the hotel feels the shuttle will be a target for anti-American sentiment. I am not making this up. Thingorjus |
I pulled the trigger and made the change - now we are at the Arethusa Hotel. 85 euros is not bad!
