Athens Hotel near Airport
Can anyone recommend a nice hotel not too far from the Athens airport? We will be staying the night before flying back to the states. Most of our time in Greece will be spent on the islands. thanks for your help.

Hi Claveygirl,
Just got back from Greece last week, and had the dreaded 6AM flight departing from Athens, so I needed to stay at a hotel close by the night before.
The only hotel right IN the airport is the Sofitel (literally walking distance, just outside the airport); but I didn't want to spend that much money and had a reservation at the Holiday Inn. It's a really nice hotel, clean & modern - they have a complimentary shuttle to/from the airport (approx. 15 minutes) and 30 minute complimentary internet access in their business center (any more time you'd pay for as you go).
Hope this is helpful!

Another recommendation for the Holiday Inn. I did quite a bit of research and this was a good option. We flew in late at night and were flying out next morning. Our only problem was with the taxi driver from the airport as he didn't realise there was a new Holiday Inn and proceeded to drive right past it and headed for the Holiday Inn hotel in Athens - it was difficult to turn back and we lost an hour or thereabouts and had some words about the fare! When we eventually arrived at the hotel it was very welcoming however and the airport shuttle next morning was good.

Ozzie and Melodie,
This is indeed good news about the Holiday Inn Attika Avenue. I have not been recommending it because I was not sure that their shuttle operated early enough for people who had a 6 or 7 am departure. However you 2 seem to contradict that. Can you affirm that they will indeed run a shuttle as early as 3:30 or 4 am? Thanks!!

Jan,
yes, I can confirm they run that early..sorry, meant to put that in my quick post as it's one of the things I checked on for other travellers (and my clients).
Also, when arriving IN Athens, to get the shuttle, just go outside of the terminal, hang a right and walk down a bit where you'll see a parking lot to the right, mostly with large motorcoaches, but that's where the Holiday Inn mini-van picks up. Approximately every 30 minutes -- BUT - their website states that you should make arrangements in advance.
I tried that via email several days before, two times, and got no response.
Upon arrival I went to the Not So Helpful Man @ the Information booth who told me "we don't work with the hotels" and told me where they'd pick up "IF they have a van".
After standing there for awhile I went back inside to the same guy and asked if he'd call the Holiday Inn for me (I had the number on me); he pretended NOT to "quite" understand what I was saying and said "oh you want to CALL them" and directed me to the airport Business Center.
At the center, there's people in plexiglass booths, talking on phones and doing email -- the lady working there asked what I needed and I told her my problem, and she said "Oh, Holiday Inn ?" Reached for an address book and called them, then handed the phone to me and the guy apologized and said "sometimes our email doesn't work - better to call"....yes, thanks, I GET that now! He assured me a van would be by in 30 minutes or so.
I thanked the lady profusely for her help, walked back, told my husband what had happened and we'd just moved closer to the lot when the van pulled up! We waited a total of 10 min for 2 other couples and we were off!
