Athens hotel
I have a reservation in Plaka for 5 nights in May. I am wondering, however, if I might not prefer to stay somewhere that's less tourist central. How is Psirri? Or is there some other reasonably convenient neighborhood that's comfortable for a woman at night and a bit out of the way? My price point is cheeeep - the current reservation is for 65 euros a night.

Arts & letters, if you are lucky you MAY be able to snag a room at the MOST convenient budget hotel in all of Athens, IMHO, but I never feel it's Touristy, Hotel Phaedra, steps from everything but wonderfully quiet because no-cars lanes on 2 sides + next to a church.... about 100 feet from Lysikrates Monument (look it up on your map). Phaedra has a roof terrace, no pricey bar, just lovely tables & umbrellas where you can bring your own snacks and beverages for a quiet breakfast or sunset, all alone, with an Acropolis view. In May, I look down from the roof terrace at the churchyard, they're having a wedding or a christening, just Greeks doing their thing. Sparkly clean, only 21 rooms, and sometimes in May Mrs. M. rents out most of them to a college group (quiet studious kids, on their computers writing reports in the lobby). So inquire now! Tell Mrs. M janet from Philly sent you and (since I'm not going this year boo hop), ask for Janet's favorite room #323, corner balcony, double bed, your own pvt bath just across hall, €65 or less. Unbeatable. And just steps away from the pedestrianize promenade below the acropolis where you can walk any time of evening, all the way to Thissio, I do it all the time. Don't go fantasizing about Psirri; In today's economically-struggling Athens in districts like that, the graffiti (alas) is everywhere and (alas) many boarded-up shops. Keep your view serene ..

I meant boo hoo !!!

The Plaka is a very decent hotel with an excellent location.
Psirri is just 5 minutes away, and not less touristy necessarily. The rate you have for the Plaka is actually very good, i don't think you will find a decent hotel for less in that part of Athens. |
Clausar, I'm not sure if she meant she had a reservation at the Plaka HOTEL, or in the Plaka DISTRICT. I agree, I have not ever seen a rate that low for Plaka Hotel. even in May.

In the Plaka District.

Wondered about the 65E rate as we stayed at Hotel Plaka and it was more $ but just fine..Very well located. However I certainly would check out traveljean's comments.

Hi
The Attalos Hotel is showing 70 euro a night less 10% discount if you book now. Its in Monastiraki. Again its all touristy in very central Athens. Wonderful roof top bar. Cheaper still is the lovely neo classical Cecil Hotel. |
I like location of Cecil more than Attalos, closer to Syntagma if one takes the x95 bus to or from Airport...
|
Phaedra has the best location by far !!
Attalos is as far as i would stay at a hotel located at Athinas Street...... ( due to the proximity to the metro station) |
<i>"I like location of Cecil more than Attalos, closer to Syntagma if one takes the x95 bus to or from Airport..."</i>
I don't see how that could possibly be true, and I've stayed at the Cecil. Best way from the airport is to take the metro and get off at Monastiraki, then walk up Athinas Street. You will walk past Attalos on the way to Cecil. The X95 bus comes from the opposite direction to Syntagma Square, so there is no advantage over the metro. |
Sorry Heimdall, got mixed up in my mind with location of Astor Hotel, mea culpa.
