Athens, Greece - Where is it better to stay? Plaka or Syntagma? Please recommend hotel for 3 days...
Hello all! As part of my upcoming honeymoon, we will be visiting Athens for 3 days. I have been researching all posts and find that the GB is definitely the most popular hotel to stay at, however, I don't think our bugdet can allow for it. (Unless someone knows a great site or number for discouts!) Other than the GB, does anyone have any suggestions for a nice hotel? (Up to 250 Euro per night). Also, which part is better to stay in - Plaka or Syntagma? We are in our late 20's and would like action around us.
Thank you for your adivce. Wishing you all a wonderful new year!!

I stayed at Hotel Plaka and enjoyed it very much. Be sure to ask for a room with a view of the Parthenon. The Plaka and Syntagma are only a short walk from each other, so if you stay at Hotel Plaka, you will not be far from Syntagma. Happy new year to you too, and happy honeymooning.

I agree with the above.
It has been a long while since I've been there, but Plaka seems to me to be a lot more active at night than Syntagma, but you can easily walk from one to the other.
If you can get a discount for the Grand Bretagne, go for it, it's a great hotel in a perfect location.

I definitely like the Plaka better than Syntagma for location, although if you can stay at the GB it is better than any of the Plaka hotels. My favorite hotel Plaka is the Electra Palace. They have a great rooftop pool with a view of the Acropolis. I last stayed there in 2001, and it was around $175, but it may have gone up since then.

The Plaka has more activity than Syntagma but as mentioned they are only about 3 blocks apart. We stayed at the Hotel Plaka and it was fine - not super luxurious but comfortable and clean, in a great location. Restaurants and Plaka shops as well as the Agoras are on your doorstep and you can walk up to the Acropolis easily. Try Sisifos restaurant which is on a rooftop close to the Acropolis (geat night view) - also the Five Brothers (close to the Roman agora and in the centre of the Plaka). The Grand Bretagne is lovely but there are lots of other options if price is a consideration.

Hotel Plaka is fine for most stays, but I can't see it as a honeymoon hotel.
I've got friends who say the King George II is very nice, but have no personal experience. I don't know if there's a rooftop, but there are plenty of other places you can visit for dinner or a drink with that great view.
GB is the way to go if you can squeeze it out.
As mentioned, the short distance between Syntagma and the Plaka make hotel location pretty much a non-issue.

Thank you for your opinions - I am booking the GB. My honeymoon is only once and my fiance is greek - so it is only appropriate, right? Just trying to justify it...lol.
Thanks for the suggestions - GB it is...
