Athens: airport to city

Hello,
we are 4 adults and luggage (carryon each and tote, each). Can we be in one taxi from airport to city; and then around the city if we choose to?

thanks!!!

Unless you get a minivan, very doubtful.

I disagree, four of us frequently have taken taxis in Greece. We don't travel light: medium to large suitcase each and a back pack each. No problems.

Even if you can do it, the question is do you want to. I guess that depends on when you arrive. I'd still take the train if it's a weekday during the day. Traffic in Athens can be very heavy during the workday.

I seem to remember a recent post that suggested the train to and from the airport to Athens is having major reconstruction done.

Re: The taxi. I guess you could all pile into one but with four of you plus luggage, it might be about as comfortable as a clown car.

We've done it a number of times.

The Taxis are usuallly Mercedes, and 3 adults fit in the back if 2 of you are women of ordinary proportions (i.e. size 12 or under). If some of you carry your backpacks in your laps, you should be fine, if it's just to the hotel. Without luggage, it's fine if u want a taxi to tour you around town.

The Metro is out of action Until next Autumn. The other alternative is the Airport Express Bus E-95 that goes to Syntagma Square in about 1 hour. It's 3.2 Euros, goes every 20 minutes or so 24/7.

THere you go. If the train is out of commission, then it's a taxi, no question, even facing the traffic, though I hate the expense.

Mfk:
we have found that, generally, Athens cab drivers are some of the least accomodating in the world. Just our opinion based on some experiences over the years.

Doug, why wouldn't you take the bus?

doug_stallings Jan 8th, 2008 06:01 PM

If I'm going to be stuck in traffic, I don't want to have to deal with a crowded bus as well. That's why I'd probably do the cab.

Now, I know that's a little hypocritical of me because I've used the airport bus may times in NYC (I used it recently in fact because the cab line was so long and the bus was there).

But I reckon that with four adults, the fare split probably isn't much more per person than the bus. I especially like the train in Athens because of the speed, even more than the inexpensive fare compared to a cab.

Thanks Doug, makes sense with four persons especially.

brotherleelove2004 Jan 9th, 2008 08:41 AM

The bus is 3.2 euro per person. A taxi is going to cost a minimum of 30 euro plus excess baggage charges. _ALWAYS_ fix the price of your taxi before accepting the ride. If you take a taxi from the airport between midnight and 6 am the price doubles. It has been announced that due to some upcoming scheduled construction the Airport Metro will not be running this next summer season.
