Athens Airport Taxi/Hotel

I am going to Athens and would like to know what it would cost for a taxi to the centre of town as I understand the airport is new this year and whether taxi fares are regulated or must I watch out for being duped (like I nearly was in Barcelona). Also if anyone has stayed at either the Grande Bretagne or Inter-Continental recently and have feedback as to what they thought, it would be most appreciated...Many thanks...Moe

We were charged about 6,000-7,000 dr. from new airport to our hotel in Plaka area. Hotel staff confirmed that this rate is appropriate. DO be on guard for unscrupulous taxi drivers. We befriended one who openly admits that many of them enjoy ripping off tourists (particularly jet-lagged passengers arriving on international flights!)

We were warned of unscrupulous taxi drivers so we contacted 'George the Taxi' recommended through other Fodorites. However we paid about £30
($50) from the airport to Attalos Hotel near the Plaka. Returning we picked up a cab in the street. The driver was pleasant and helpful and charged us £12 ($15) so who felt cheated!!

We took the Express Bus from the new airport to Syntagma Square at a cost of 1000 Drachmas each. When we left Athens, we took a taxi from the Electra Palace Hotel to the airport for ~5300 Drachmas in June 2001. The taxi was definitely a good value and much more convenient than the bus.

My experience with taxi drivers in Greece is that they definately will try to cheat you. It seems to be a game. We had the advantage of a resident in front of us in line at the taxi queue at the airport. She told the driver where to take us and how much it should cost. It did, but we found out the change he gave us, 5000 drachma was Rumanian money, worth about 50 cents, not the $15 it should have been. It was dark and we didn't know what the money should look like yet. Also, many of the cabs didn't have meters. And watch out for the "taxi cab and the taverna scam". That said, taxis in Greece are very cheap. I wish they would just double the rates and not cheat me. But then the game would be no fun for them.

I just returned from Athens. For taxis at the airport just wait in the taxi line and hope you get one with air conditioning. The cost should not be more than $17. I think the Athens Plaza is superior to the Grande B. and in a better location than the Inter-Contiental.
