At Home in the World..Frances Mayes latest
Wondering if anyone who has read this recent book would care to comment. Mayes (of Under the Tuscan Sun fame) is not a wonderful writer but she did manage to convey to me her enthusiasm about several places and she sparked my ineterest in visiting Portugal. I am most interested in comments regarding individual towns, hotels and restaurants in the areas she covers, in particular: Portugal, Andalucia, Morocco, Capri.

So sorry. The title of the book is, "A Year in the World," NOT "At Home in the World!"

Thanks, Scarlett. I missed the earlier thread. Glad to see many others share my opinions of her books and her attitudes. I would like to hear from people that have stayed or eaten in some of the places she wrote about....are there any good hotel or restaurant finds embedded in the ho hum here? (Often she does not give exact names of places which is frustrating...) Amazing, isn't it, how many books this woman has sold...she seems to portray herself as so very knowledgeable about all things Italian, for example but lacks even a fraction of the knowledge and insight and, certainly, the writing style, of Tim Parks just to name one fellow expat author. And she certainly lacks the cleverness and humor of Peter Mayle.

When a low talent writer like her even gets in print, one has to assume she is bonking several power brokers. She must be much much better in that department.

I grabbed this book from the library to read over my trip & I'm so glad I didn't actually buy it. I skimmed through the entire thing in about an hour - how boring - way too much detail.
