Assistance for choosing a hotel in Venice please...
 

I have done some research on Tripadvisor ans well as this webse but am still trying to decide between:

Ca' Dei Dogi, which is located near Piazza San Marco on a canal and it a bit more basic

OR

Ca' Dogaressa, which is located a little further out near the Fuglie Water Bus stop but appears to be a nicer hotel

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Venice is rather small, so as long as it's on Venice proper, almost any location is decent. I am not familiar with the location of your 2nd choice.

Ca' Dogaressa - isn't it in Canneregio (sp?) closer to the train station?

When is your trip and how long are you staying?

I've been MIA for the last few days with illness. Hopefully, my response is still timely.

We are going the last week in March/first week in april of next year.

Venice is rather small, size-wize, but your second choice, is quite far from the "main" part of Venice, San Marco and the like. You will either be taking the vaporetto a lot or walking a lot, either of which is a scenic option in Venice, but will add travel time to whatever you choose to see. You might get tired of being so far from the center.

We're going in September and booked a twin at 170euro at Locanda San Barnaba in Dorsoduro, a bit 'northward' of the Accademia bridge. The comments on Tripadvisor are encouraging. (there is no elevator but only 4 levels, I think). Located about 50 meters from the Ca'Rezzonico vaporetto stop, Line 1.

I hope you're feeling better now. I asked about the time of year and length of your trip because I think it makes a difference in your choice.

First, let me say that the Ca' Dogaressa looks lovely. It is out of the way. However, if you're staying a week, you could purchase a pass and get off and on vaporetti as much as you felt like.

It would be well placed for day trips by train.

I would probably recommend a more central location for a short visit. It would then be important to save time.

But there are sights everywhere in Venice; if you have the time, it would be great to be in a different and interesting location.

If the hotel has a great price, good reviews, and is attractive to you, as well as responsive to your queries, it might be nice to have the prettier, and maybe more comfortable room. The location pictures are pretty cool on the website.

Ca Dogaressa is in the Ghetto, a very quiet, historic area of venice. There are a number of fine restaurants within a short walk, including Anice Stellato and La Fontana, on the Cannaregio canal. its close to the Giglio stop (I think) on the circular route vaporetti and within a fairly short walk to the Giglio bridge, the station, and stops on the Grand Canal, and main shopping streets.

I personally like the quiet atmospheric back streets of Venice - certainly much more than the congested area between San Marco and Rialto - but it just depends on what you want and whether you have a tolerance for walking - all of Venice is walkable, thats how the Venetians travel around their city.

There are MANY hotels in Venice. You shouldnt have a problem finding one that matches your needs.
