Assisi St Francis Basilica question
 

In Assisi I believe there is an upper an lower basilica of St Francis and there is also the St Clara church. I was under the impression that the St Clara church was more in the center of town and below the St Francis Basilica.

Can any of you help me as to which church is higher on the hill?

The Basilica of S Francesco is at the western end of town and downhill from the center. The Basilica of S Chiara is at the eastern edge of the town (not too far from the Piazza del Commune) and on a higher elevation as the hill ascends toward the east.

Both are beauties!

S. Francesco is the church on the left, S. Chiara the one on the far right; S. Chiara is way nearer to town center, and a little higher on the hill than S. Francesco. Btw, the upper and lower basilica are both in the same building, which has simply two storeys.

Well, it appears that memory can truly fail us and it has certainly failed me. I believed that S Chiara was more in the center of town BUT also below where the upper and lower St Francis basilicas were.

But, then again, when I left Assisi a major earthquake hit four hours later.

I would consider St. Chiara at the opposite end of town and not the center but I'm not looking at a map. I can also swear to the fact that St. Francis is downhill. Once you made the walk back up to Piazza Commune, you'll see what I mean.

Yes, you're all right but my memory of St Francis is going up the western side of town and into the parking lot and then into the lower basilica. Our hotel was right next to the parking lot.

And we did drive a good bit around the town as we had a car.
