Assisi or Perugia in Italy

If you had to choose and why?

each has its own particular feel. it would depend upon what your interests are.

assisi is by far the smaller and is more medieval in character. while it is much more obviously touristed, it is also, to me, very spiritual and atmospheric.

perugia is a functioning city with a charming older city center. while not exactly bustling, there is a distinct city vibe there with all the attendant variety offered by larger venues.

assisi is much more "precious", a jewel to be savoured for its uniqueness.

I concur with the first reply. Very peaceful (Assisi) and beautiful, especially if you can spend the night and enjoy the streets once the tourists have left.

I can't speak for Perugia, but it'd be awfully hard to top the Assisi experience for all the reasons already stated.

Thanks, that helps me...I think we will do Assisi but if anyone else has any more opinions I welcome them.

Perugia is a better location for taking side trips to Gubbio, Todi and Cortona, but Assisi probably gets the nod, for the reasons posted above. One drawback is that Assisi is extremely touristy unless you go in February or November. Perugia has much more significant art museums. If I had only one or two nights, I'd probably stay in Assisi, despite the drawbacks.

Yes, we are driving from Munich (I have family there) to Rome and are trying to find a few jewels to visit on the way to and from. I am going to pass on Florence this time and have it be for the next trip.
