Assisi on Sunday - Everything Closed?
I am planning on visiting Assisi with my mother in late October by taking the train from Rome. If we went on a Sunday, will all the shops be closed?
Definitely want to visit the Basilica which I understand is closed on Sunday mornings. Would visiting on Saturday or Monday be better? |
We went to Assisi in Sept 2007 on a Sunday and almost everything was open. No problem at all.
|
We were there on a Sunday in September and the town was bustling with other tourists. We weren't there for the shopping, but I have to believe the shops were open. The Basilica was very crowded (in the afternoon).

We did Assisi by train for a daytip from Rome and our overwhelming thought was: we should have stayed the night. So I would advise you, if you possibly can, to spend the night there - it is a beautiful city with more to see than just the cathedral.

We were there last year in late Feb on a weekday. There was a crowd but nothing like a weekend particularly Sunday.
I recommend that you go on Monday because even in Oct there will be a crowd particularly on weekends. Enjou...it's a wonderful place. And has been suggested, staying overnight is worthwhile. |
A Basilica closed on Sunday mornings???? #-o It may be closed for tourism but certainly open for religious services. I attended Mass at the Basilica of Santa Chiara on a Sunday morning November 2002. We then had lunch and visited the Basilica of San Francis. There are definitely a number of shops and places in Assisi that are closed on Sunday,
