Assisi hotels: Hotel Berti or Hotel Subasio

I am now working on the third piece of our trip, and I had thought we were okay with Dei Priori, but they came back and said they actually do not have the space for the days that we want. I once stayed at Hotel Umbra, and thought it was fine, but I believe that I promised the other couple we would only stay in hotels with elevators. I cannot find a whole lot to choose from. I did find this nice map http://www.ete.it/assisi/30120120.htm but I don't know details about the places it shows. So now I am trying to figure out whether the web site http://itwg.com is any good. Both of the hotels Berti and Subasio are listed there, but I don't know where they are on a map of Assisi. The hotel Subasio does not have a webpage on the itwg.com site, but it is listed as four-star, and is larger. It has 61 rooms. I cannot figure out where is Via Frate Elia. The Berti says it is two-star. It has 10 rooms, and it says this about itself. Situato a duecento metri dalla Basilica di S. Francesco in un angolo caratteristico di Assisi, è provvisto di un piccolo giardino dove può essere consumata una colazione estiva all'ombra di un grande albero I guess that means 200 meters from the Basilica, and I can tell where Piazza San Pietro is (based on number 9 on the map menitioned above). If anyone has ever seen or stayed at either of these hotels, I would appreciate your responses. Thanks, Irvin

I stayed in the Subasio, albeit 10 years ago. Please take my comments with a grain of salt, since it could certainly have changed since that time: The hotel was really nice, very good value for money. Fairly central, though nothing is that far in Assisi. Rooms were good sized, clean. Staff was helpful, though I do speak a modicum of Italian. (Don't know if they spoke English at all.) I'd stay there again. But as I said, that was 10 years ago.

Please forgive me if I ask you to consider your budget per night? I travel to Assisi once a month, and not only did I keep secret my TERRIBLE visit to the Hotel Subasio...I heard over the last few months in ristorante's from others who 'HATED' the "SHABBY" Subasio..it USED to be great. If your budget can withstand it, try: www.hotelfontebella.com It isn't EXPENSIVE by any means, the margin is so thin, you would think to take the lower end of the scale! Feel free to e-mail me directly if you need to...I've spent 12 weeks based in Assisi since October...

wendy, I cannot get www.hotelfontabella.com to open. and I cannot tell if it is available on www.italyhotel.com or not.

I thought I had this solved when I found this website for hotel Berti http://www.edisons.it/homepages/berti/Hotel.html complete with an e-mail address. But my e-mail to them bounced back. I guess I will try telephoning them tomorrow and maybe follow up with a fax. Does anybody else have any other info on this place?

I didn't stay at the Subasio, but I had to use their toillet facilities (sorry). It was a year ago, and it looked pretty clean and well kept. It's the only four stars inside Assisi, and it's quite close to the basilica. The Fontebella is nice, the rooms are charmy, but tiny.

We stayed at the Giotto while in Assisi and it was a good hotel. It was very close to the basilica. We had a huge room with a lovely view of the rooftops. You might want to check it out. We like it.

Thank you, Deena. The giotto is listed as number 2 on the website I first listed in my initial post. From what I can read of the Italian on their description, the hotel does not have an elevator. And from the picture they show, it looks like it be a pretty big climb up from its location to the Basilica. Do you know? Is this right? I think we are going to go with Il Palazzo, which is number 5 on that same website. I found out that it listed on http://www.karenbrown.com and I guess that her books make for a pretty good reference. It doesn't have an elevator either, but I telephoned them and they can give us rooms on the first floor, which I guess means up one flight of stairs. I may write to Wendy to see what she can tell me of the general lay of the land there. I was in Assisi many years ago, and it does seem like there are some pretty good ups and dpwns, even within the walled city itself. I might try the San Francesco also since it looks to be the closest of all to the Basilica. Many thanks, Irvin I'll try to get back here with additional information, if I get any.

It has been years since I've been to the Giotto but come to think of it, I don't remember any elevators. I don't remember having to walk very far to the basilica uphill though. I just tried finding a webpage for the Giotto and couldn't find one.

The Subasio is right next to the Basilica. Yes, it is a little worn, but we still enjoyed the incredible views. The staff was helpful, the location was great for repeat visits to the Basilica. There is an elevator.
