Assisi Hotel - suggestions?
 

My wife and I will be in Umbria in October. We have determined Assisi or Spello as our 2-day base to drive around western part of Umbria - unless somebody else suggests, and convinces me, otherwise. <BR>Any recommendation for accomodations (&lt;= $120 per) in those cities would be appreciated.

Last year we stayed in hotel Abacus in Assisi. The rooms were big and very clean and air-conditioned. <BR>The hotel is near Basilica Santa Maria degli Angeli that you must visit. <BR>The hotel fax : 075/8043948. <BR> Enjoy your trip. <BR>

Good afternoon, Can suggest the HOTEL <BR>WINDSOR SAVOIA, which has 34 rooms, it <BR>is very old but has a wonderful exposure to the west overlooking the valley and <BR>the Santa Maria degli Angeli about a <BR>couple of kms west. Did also have a ver6y good family run dining room. <BR>the HOTEL GIOTTO has 70 rooms, is much <BR>newer, good views when facing west and <BR>had also a good dining room. I give unqualified thumbs up recommendations to two hotels IN Assisi (as opposed to Santa Maria degli Angeli, which is where the train stattion is - - at the base of the hill BELOW Assisi). <BR> <BR>Fontebella - - stayed there May this year. Has parking right in front of the door (a rarity in Assisi), which would prove useful if you plan to day trip out from Assisi <BR> <BR>and <BR> <BR>Umbra - - stayed there October 99. Even better (more central) location, and an excellent restaurant. Only reason we didnt return there was that the hotel has no elevator (wanted this for my father-in-law) - - and not QUITE as convenient to the Basilica itself (I guess that should be BasilicaS - - as there are two, one stacked right on top of the other!) <BR> <BR>Best wishes, <BR> <BR>Rex <BR>

Rex's suggestion of the Umbra is a good one. Very centrally located. Another would be the Subasio in Assisi near the Basilica at the other end of a long parking lot there, but all rooms vary so take a look at the one assigned before agreeing. It's in a great location and has a wonderful outdoor veranda. We enjoyed the slightly more than average Buca di San Francesco restaurant in Assisi. Close to the Umbra is probably the best restaurant in town, Medio Evo. Magical city--enjoy.

Thank you, everyone, for your suggestions. They are all helpful and provide the bases for my decision. I'll report back on the outcome.

Hello RC, I agree with Rex and KAM about selections in Assisi. Let me add the Palazzo Bocci in Spello as a good option if you want more of a village ambiance.
