Asking Expert Fodors Advise For Spain, Italy, Greece Honeymoon

My fiance and I have 2 weeks to spend on our honeymoon. There are 3 destinations we have in mind, and would like to ask the expert advise of those on this forum.

Spain
Italy
Greece

First, what combination of two or three of these destinations is optimal, given the time available, and once decided, what are the can't miss cities and attractions we must take in?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

What activities do you see yourselves enjoying the most? The least?

kybourbon Mar 16th, 2013 08:58 PM

What time of year?

Hey S,

2 weeks is just right for a honeymoon in Italy.

Fly into Venice - 4 nights, train to Florence - 4 nights, train to Rome - 5 nights.

Visit Siena from Florence and Orvieto and Ostia Antica from Rome.

Why turn a pleasant stay in Italy into a trek?

A 2-week honeymoon sounds lovely. Choose one country to visit and enjoy each other in your surroundings.

Thank you everyone for your reply. As far as activities are concerned. It's a mix of lying on the beaches (my fiance), taking in the culture (myself), and wine tasting (both of us). We'd really like to get 2 of the 3 in, and still keep it within a 7-9k budget.

Sorry for just getting back to all of you, wedding stuff lol

This Summer. July 28th for 2 weeks

BigAleinstein Jun 6th, 2013 11:13 AM

As others have stated pick one country and enjoy it. Your budget should be just fine even though air fares are get higher by the moment and you will be traveling at peak season especially at beach resorts.

That was very nice of you to invite us all to your wedding but I am busy that weekend. You better get on the stick and make decisions about the honeymoon.

steve1881 Jun 6th, 2013 11:18 AM

Yes, I know. We've been so bogged down with all the other aspects of the wedding that the honeymoon is taking a back seat. The problem is, that's what we should be spending the most time on!

So sorry you can't make it :( Feel free to just send a gift :-p

Thanks again all!

My vote is for Athens and the islands. OR Amalfi Coast and Rome.
Hated Florence in the summer months.

If you really want to combine two countries:

Fly to Athens. Try to connect same day to one of the islands. Since it's your first visit, I'd pick either Santorini, Mykonos, or Crete.

Fly back to Athens. Spend three days.

Fly to Venice. Spend three or four days.

Train or fly to Rome. Spend three or four days.

Fly home from Rome.

When you decide on your itinerary, post again with your budget so we can make some hotel suggestions.

BTW, wanted to add that you need to book ASAP if you're going end of July! Busiest time of the year in most of Europe!

steve1881 Jun 6th, 2013 12:19 PM

Awesome! Thanks for your feedback!

Now I'm starting to get worried. Guess I know what I'll be researching and doing over the next couple of days!

So sorry you can't make it :( Feel free to just send a gift :-

Should be getting it any day now.

With so little time for a July trip, you should keep it simple without a lot of moving parts.

steve1881 Jun 6th, 2013 01:02 PM

All your input here is gift enough, trust me!

BigAleinstein Jun 6th, 2013 01:38 PM

That is very nice, but I prefer cash.

To simply matters, you might want to see if there is a cruise to Greek Isles. Others can offer opinions on which cruise line are prefferable.

Another suggestion is to go to Barcelona where there are many beach towns north and south. It will be hot and expensive for July but it is one of Europe's great cities.

Booking.com is a most relaible source of hotels, we have used it about 8 countries.

(1) Book now.

(2) You're her fiancé, she's your fiancée.

(3) Beaches and Europe aren't necessarily a prime combination, especially if you're from the US where we have both better beaches generally and access to FAR better beaches within a couple of flight hours (one word: Caribbean). So unless you're going to Greece, minimize the beach time and take her to Belize or Costa Rica for Thanksgiving when it's still shoulder season, not high season (seriously, you've put off getting hitched for 13 years, both sides of the family should forgive you deciding to f--- off for a beach week over Thanksgiving).

(4) Spain and Italy have better wine and more to tour; various Greek Islands have better beaches.

steve1881 Jun 6th, 2013 01:41 PM

Barcelona was high on my list as well. I've been told over and over that we should make it there. I'll take a look at booking.com, thanks for the heads up.

BigRuss Jun 6th, 2013 01:43 PM

Actually, the Costa del Sol and Barcelona both have decent beaches. Italy really doesn't. Costa del Sol will be seriously warm in your time frame so if you're from a place in the US that's not used to a lot of heat, don't do it.

Hi

When are you going? Stick with one country. Italy - no contest, the most romantic country in the world :-X
