Ascona Switzerland

Can anyone help out with the italian part of switzerland, the Ascona/Bellinzona/Locarno region. What are the highlights? Should we stay 2 nights there and two in Portofino or 1 night there and 3 in Portfino? Thanks

I spent 3 nights in Locarno last year - the area is like being in Italy. Bellinzona is a very pretty town to visit. I took a day long boat trip on Lake Maggiore, stopping at different Italian villages along the way - a great way to spend a day. Also took the cable car up the hill from Lugano and walked down to one of the lake villages, catching a bus back to Lugano. It's a very pretty area, but I haven't been to Portofino, so I can't compare them.

Different vibes. I'm partial to the lakes, but Portofino is a beautiful spot. I think it would depend on the time of year (and tourist crowds).

We will be there in four weeks.

You'll be there in the middle of May? Hmmm.... weather-wise, I'd say go to Portofino for warmer temperatures. But I love Tessin too.

I love Ascona for its beauty and peacefulness. On Saturdays, there's often a market on the promenade and quite a lot of action. If you walk towards Locarno along the lake, you'll find a nice car-free road that takes you to the public beach. The beach is gorgeous with lots of grass and even some sand. We often walk down to the harbour and back. An easy (but longer) walk.

If you're there with the car, go to Manor (located a bit outside of Ascona) for a bit of shopping. Nice meat and cheese section. Also, if you're staying a bit longer in the area, go to the end of Val Verzasca and say hi to my Canadian friend Carmen from me. She manages the sport restaurant. It's a beautiful drive.

Hard decision but I've never been to Portofino.
