Artificial Sweeteners in Italy

Every country seems to either have them or not and if they do they have different kinds. While in Africa I was not able to find Splenda in most restaurants, while in New York I was. What kind of artificial sweeteners are usually available in restaurants in Italy? or are they at all?

I've seen them at hotel buffet breakfasts but not in restaurants. Why not take your own ? I think that's what most people who use them do.

I've never seen them on a table in a restaurant. As Caroline says; bring your own.

I've found most countries in Europe have them but they are packaged differently than in the US. In restaurants they may be in a round cardboard type container and the sweetner is in tablet form and are tiny. They usually come out the bottom of the container by twisting the container. If it's packets, they are very tiny also and contain the tablets not a powder and are 1/8 -1/4 the size of a packet of swt-n-low.

Hi W,

A pound of your favorite sweetener takes up very little room, and should last two weeks. :)

Having just returned from Italy last week, and using artificial sweeteners myself (except of course in the delicious little cups of pure black gold), I always carry my favorite type with me. They do not, at all, have the same types that we are used to back home and in order to not be disappointed, I take what I need with me.

They used to call those "tiny little tablets" saccharine...

I think we can also get aspartame & the rest as tiny tablets in a small tube. Handier to carry round than something resembling a one pound bag of sugar !

I have always been given artificial sweetner in Italy when I've asked for it, it is not on the bar with the regular sugar...just ask for;

"dolce ficante,per favore"
