Article on Rue des Martyrs, Paris
 

Tomorrow's New York Times travel section has an article on this untouristed street in Montmartre, including shopping, dining, and a couple of hotels.
The Times requires free registration.

Elaine, I read that this morning and it mentions a shop in the 9th that sells old records. Someone posteed this week looking for some I think.
My paper was soaked from the snow. It was tossed instead of left at the door.

Thanks for telling us, Elaine. We don't always get the Times on a Sunday but tomorrow we will. I know Montmartre isn't a universal Parisian favorite, but my husband and I love it and always try to stay near it. If you take the trouble to find the untouristed parts of Montmartre, you'll find that it can be a very beautiful, serene neighborhood.

I don't recall walking that street in Montmartre and of all the well-traveled areas of Paris, I have spent the least amount of time in Montmartre and know it not well at all

I stayed right near rue des Martyrs last summer in Paris, it is a great market street and an interesting area. The part I know mainly isn't in what I'd call Montmartre but just the 9th arrondisement, south of Montmartre. I almost stayed at one of the hotels they name, the Lamartine, but ended up in Les Trois Poussins close to St Georges metro stop.

The rooms were comfortable and large; I had one with a small kitchenette (one they call a studio). The location was great and the staff just very friendly and helpful. It was right next to a great square with a bunch of ethnic restaurants (Tholoze or something).

I got a discount off high season rates because it was summer season. I liked the hotel a lot but think it a little overpriced given the location for the regular rates (I wouldn't pay 140 euro or more for that studio, for example, as I think that's what it is normally). My only complaint was the bed had a foam mattress which I don't think is acceptable for a 3* hotel. You will find a comment about that on tripadvisor also, and I sort of took it with a grain of salt thinking, oh that can't be true -- but it was. It wasn't terribly uncomfortable, but still not as nice as a regular mattress, of course. They had some nice larger rooms people with kids were staying in.
