Article on comfortable walking sandals

Hi
In today's New York Times there is an article called "Open Season for Toes" about
sandals comfortable enough for serious walking.
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/03/24/te...tml?oref=login

The article is about ordering these on-line, but the suggested sandal brand names and descriptions seem useful.

Thanks for the tip, Elaine. I'm going to check out some of the websites, especially the one that tells you what to look for when buying a shoe.

I've never been one to wear sandals of any kind to do much walking, but the description of one pair as like walking on pillows and mattresses really grabbed me

suze Mar 24th, 2005 09:50 AM

I saw a similar feature in a womens magazine at the doctors office recently (maybe in "Self"? or Fitness or the like).

Grasshopper Mar 24th, 2005 09:52 AM

I went through the whole registration thing and then it defaulted to an error (please try again) page. Can you tell me what the kind is that feels like walking on pillows?

I just bought some Geox sandals and they feel like walking on cushions. Very comfy!

I wanted something very light to wear in summer. I was very skeptical that sandals would work for hours and hours of walking per day - but Rieker sandals did.

the author preferred the sandals by Born, model is Riche
available from www.zappos.com apparently

geribrum Mar 24th, 2005 11:04 AM

For the most comfortable walking sandal ever, check out crocs.com

I have 3 pairs of these funny looking things and am in the market for a couple more--most comfortable shoe ever! Two weeks in Egypt last May and another two weeks in the interior of Mexico in Feb. and never a sore tootsie with my Crocs.

redhead68 Mar 24th, 2005 11:07 AM

I haven't tried them, but I've heard good things about Crocks also.

flygirl Mar 24th, 2005 11:07 AM

I have a few pairs of Born shoes. not haute couture, but wow are they comfy.

suze Mar 24th, 2005 11:31 AM

i know i like Geox shoes, never tried the sandals.

cigalechanta Mar 24th, 2005 11:53 AM

Elaine, an hour ago I flipped through all the sights after tearing the article off the page. The Riches, I liked except I wished it didn't have the perforations.

elaine Mar 24th, 2005 03:14 PM

You know, I finally decided to take a look at these and I went directly to the Born website www.bornshoes.com

the 'riche' model is not at all what I expected, in that's it's cute.
I was expecting something sturdier-looking (and less attractive, I suppose)
I'm going to Israel and Jordan end of June. I normally never wear sandals while trekking around in cities, but I was thinking that sneakers might be too hot. I did a search on stores where I can find Born shoes; I may do some trying on this weekend. Inevitably though, the store I pick won't have all the Born variations.

The only sandals that works for my poor abused feet are SAS.
I tried all kind of brands, some were quite expensive but nothing compare with my SAS.

tripgirl Mar 24th, 2005 06:30 PM

Just looked at the Born Riches and they are indeed cute. Now added to my list to try!

Grasshopper and suze: I am thinking about getting the Geox D Euro Loafer on zappos.com: product number 7147380. Do either of you own a loafer from Geox. If so, how long can you wear them while walking around.

Need a closed shoe in addition to a sandal

Thanks a mil....

Since many imported comfortable shoes are so wide, I've never tried Naots until today, when I bought a pair of what-I-assume-will-be very comfortable sandals. They fit nicely, and whereas they are not sexy shoes, they are not ugly-clompy either, more attractive than lots of comfy sandals.

suze Mar 25th, 2005 02:46 PM

tripgirl- hey, that's my shoe!! I bought one pair in black leather, and more recently one in a patent croc (I prefer the leather because although technically the same shoe the soft leather has more give).

they are extremely comfortable and i wear them all day at work, but they really don't have much support so would not be my choice if you're looking for a true "walking shoe".

kasperdoggie Mar 25th, 2005 04:25 PM

Born sandals really are comfortable - I abused mine all over Italy last spring and both my feet and sandals held up remarkably well. I should add that they have 3" heels - I assume flats are even more comfy. Some of the designs are occasionaly problematic if you have high arches - but most of their shoes do feel very soft and cushy. And in my opinion, Born are among the least dowdy option in comfort footware - spoken as a high heel addict :)

cigalechanta Mar 25th, 2005 04:43 PM

put me on as a born fan. I have wide feet and they are the only acceptable travel shoe for me.

Grasshopper Mar 25th, 2005 05:06 PM

Tripgirl, my closed walking shoes are Ecco Receptors. I have the clogs which makes them easy to get into and out of at the airport. They are great for walking. I wear them even in snow in Colorado as long as the snow isn't deep powder.
