Day 14 - July 25

On 25th July we went to Compiegne Castle.
In Compiegne, while walking towards the castle the beautiful architecture of the Town Hall building drew our attention.

This Castle was one of Napoleonís residences and has a less impressive architecture than the castles we visited before.

During the tour, the guide drew our attention to a style of painting in shadows, which from a distance gives the impression of a bas-relief.

We looked closer and indeed, what from a distance looked like a bas-relief, it was actually a painting in shadows representing various mythological characters.

The gardens werenít so spectacular like at other castles that we visited, but we recognized the style of André Le Notre, and the guide confirmed to us.

We walked through the gardens and returned to Paris.

This was the last night at the hotel and next day we moved on to Belgium for 9 days.

But about that trip another time, on another thread, as a different report.

It is a true pleasure to read a report from someone who is more interested in culture and history than a list of restaurants to visit!

Gabriel, Thanks for posting this very enjoyable belated report! My husband and I also just happened to be in Paris on Bastille Day for our first trip there and it was quite impressive and overwhelming.

Gabriel...Thank you so much for a unique and informative report. Nice to hear about all of the castles and day trips you took. I loved that movie Vatel and enjoyed reading about the lovely castle you saw related to it. Must add that to my list of things to see.

Just loved your Paris report. Would be interested to learn of how you reached Compiegne Castle - was it a tour, or by a train (would appreciate details of the tour group's name or the train station). Have downloaded the website of the castle and it is on my must-see list for my next Paris visit. Believe it is fabulous, is this right?

Because I went on holiday in the last week of June, I didn't have the time to check back on this report.

So it is only now that I see that some of you wrote words of appreciation. I'm so glad that you liked my report.

Therefore, Moolyn, Cameron, Dejais and Koaljay, thank you for that.

Koaljay, we took a train from Gare du Nord to reach Compiegne Castle.

Both my wife and I enjoyed the visit there, and we liked the interior decorations, furniture and objects of art.

Compiegne Castle doesn't have the fairy tale appearance, or the typical castle look, with towers and so on, being more like a flat construction, however, it has the typical French style garden designed by the famous Andre Le Notre, and the furniture inside is Imperial.

This was a Napoleon residence, after all, and you can tell that when you visit. Definitely worth it.
