Blimey! Mestre! Blech!

I would rather wear a wooly jumper from Primark.

I would rather jump off of a bridge!

I could not imagine sleeping across the street from the Mestre train station. You have lost your mind.

I have to admit while Mestre has a few nice places, right outside the station is not one of them, I might look for a hotel a block back at least

I would MUCH RATHER stay in Venice proper. But unless someone wants to personally escort me, DH and two 9 year olds to our hotel after midnight it's not gonna happen. I read many a time how tricky Venice roads can be to navigate and I don't want to get lost. Our hotel is a few blocks down the road from Mestre station, not directly across from it. We will only be in Venice for one day. We will use Mestre station to get to Venice the next morning and come back in the evening. The next morning we are gone.

Venice is not the focus of this trip. We purchased tickets to VCE simply because they were much less expensive than the surrounding airports we were looking at (MUC and VIE mainly). And to be honest Venice hotels are so expensive. I get sticker shock every time I look at them. I would need to find one with 24 hour front desk to let us in after midnight. And one with a room big enough to accommodate four people. Those two requirements alone only leave us with a handful of options are the dates we will be there and I refuse to pay $600 a night....view of the grand canal or not!

I'm not going to quibble with your plans as they are, but just for the record we spent less than $600 (I assume that's US dollars) for 5 nights in a beautiful, huge, well-located apartment in an old palazzo at the end of 2017. Breakfast included.

Okay you all convinced me to bypass Mestre. We just booked a hotel near Piazzale Roma. Nothing fancy but looks decent and we won't be spending too much time there anyhow. I just changed our car rental plans so that we are picking up at the Europcar at Piazzale Roma when we depart Venice.

I would prefer an apartment (our preferred vacation accommodations) but couldn't find anything with a check-in after midnight.

Now trying to figure out the ATVO. Looks like busses run VCE to Piazzale Roma through 1:20 so we should be okay catching one.

Thanks again everyone!

I know it is sometimes more complicated to travel with children, but I think that you will be very happy that you pushed a little bit more and stayed in Venice proper.
