Judyrem,
Interesting about du Forum - I'll bet they can tell your husband exactly where the scenes were shot.

FYI, if my memory serves me correctly, there is an old Roman road in Arles that would be a wonderful place for an afternoon walk. It is lined with empty stone sarcophogi (some still with lids), which makes for quite an eerie experience. I'm pretty sure it shows up on tourist maps.

I also second the folk museum - especially if you have a turn of bad weather.

That's Les Alycamps, painted by Van Gogh or Gaughin and is on the tourist maps. There's a good tourist office on the main street, a few blocks from the hotel, where you can get maps and information. When you walk out the door of the hotel you will be facing the cafe painted by Van Gogh, and reporduced on posters, post cards etc. a zillion time.

While I can't help you with your choice between Nimes and Arles, I'd like to relate a story concerning bullfighting and children.

We were in Nimes during a bullfight. We stood outside the beautiful arena and saw the matadors, wearing beautiful sparkling gold and red clothes, ride in on proud horses. People were applauding. It was quite a sight.

Next to an entrance, we also saw a truck with a wooden backboard, ready to load the bulls. There was dried blood all over those backboards. My children were ENRAGED. They saw the blood and knew those bulls would be injured or killed. Needless to say, we didn't go in to watch.

Bullfighting can awake a lot of unforeseen emotions in children (and adults.)

I simply cannot believe how this thread has taken on a life of its own, so long after it was originally posted. A load of great information here...thanks to everyone who responded.

As my LW mentioned, we did choose Arles and enjoyed it a great deal. As far as Big Al's recommendation of the Pont du Gard, I agree in the strongest possible terms. In fact, it's the current background shot on our web site:
onelittleworld.com

...where you can read a full report of our experiences there, and even see some pictures we took.

Thanks again to everyone.

mrgo, very nice web site with info...I bookmarked it for the restaurants and info. I felt instead of starting a new thread, I would just add to the old one..worked out fine, yes?
