Areas to avoid as a person of color?

Why would I go out of my way to be offended by a stranger? The manner in which you post comes across as standoffish in my opinion. It seems that way because you kept refuting statements when that didn't even contribute to the discussion as a whole positively. I don't value anyone's opinion of someone else's, so there's no point in singling out Sandralist comment. Earlier, when I said that I made my decision on whether or not to go, it was based off of no one really providing any instances of racism in a particular area. The LACK of tangible anecdotes made me want to go. So there really is no point in a lecture on racism vs gossip. I've already made my decision. Good day to you.

And for anyone in the future who finds this thread and wonders the same thing that I did, apparently, the general consensus is just to dive in. If you experience anything, chalk it up to cultural differences and keep it moving.

"Earlier, when I said that I made my decision on whether or not to go..."

Yes - you said this at 7:54 last night. It was odd then and it's odd to hear it again now...

You were always going to Germany. You decided that before you posted. Going was never in question - the only question was WHERE. Just look at the TITLE of your own post:

"AREAS TO AVOID as a person of color"

(Not "Should I go?")

You repeat the same question in the body of your first post:

"Which areas should I avoid as a person of color? Which do you think would be fine to visit? ...have you personally experienced racism or witnessed it in Germany?"

It was never a question of "whether" at all. You asked WHERE to avoid and you asked for STORIES about these places that would justify avoiding them.

Your repeat announcement will be added to the extra-long list of weird statements from you that make you sound very confused.

Then you refer to "The LACK of tangible anecdotes..." on this thread...

Yeah. That's what I've been saying. But my pointing this out was keeping you from hearing all the "people who want to tell their stories" - that's what you just said. Stories? There are no stories. But there are stories...

Huh?

Aargh. Maybe you can remember your own questions and understand other posters in German, but following your English here really has been very difficult. At least I tried.

How are you going to tell me what I want to do? My question is just a question, not my entire itinerary. If people told me that what I heard was true, and that there was way more to it, I would've stopped thinking about going. I said I was THINKING about going, not that my ticket was bought and everything was set in stone. Are you a mod? Why do you have to dictate over how people comment and choose to understand my question?! Good grief, if I had known that I was going to get this kind of reception, I wouldn't have asked at all.

"I've been wanting to travel to Germany for quite some time now"

Where do you see me state that I'm for sure going in my question? AFTER I received the comments did I decide on actually going. Not before hand. That's something you need to understand.

Thank you Wanttogobutidk for your posts, and I hope you will simply ignore the extremely rude posts from Fussgaenger. No idea why he has gone off on you in such a way, ranting and insulting not only you but almost everyone else on here. It must be some kind of personal problem and he has chosen to take it out on you.

Much of Germany is very diverse, especially the larger cities and you ought to have a great time here. Even the smaller towns will be a joy to visit and I hope you have fun here. Please post again with a trip report.

well said, Mainhattengirl.

Perhaps Fussgaenger got out of the bed the wrong side!

I will Mainhattengirl. I'm thinking about going later this year, so if I do, I'll definitely follow up!

M'girl: I objected to the way posters have treated the OP's question and the incredibly weak advice. Like saying blacks shouldn't go to Dresden because right-wingers there have a problem with refugee housing - Like 90% of this thread, it's irrelevant chatter, IMO, unrelated to the OP's question. (If you find that rude or insulting, oh well. Maybe you don't appreciate diversity of opinion?)

As Wanttogo points out (where she incorrectly says I'm "dictating" the thread) I WAS absolutely trying to steer comments toward her actual question. Much later it became clear to me that this was a complete waste of effort (and something I don't plan to waste time on again.) She didn't seem to care that responses didn't match her question, probably because she herself didn't grasp what question she actually asked. And she seemed to misunderstand everything, including the fact I was trying to help her. When she said, "Let people have their opinions and move on," I should have done just that. No sense making a silk purse out of a sow's ear with a nonsense thread like this one was if that's the way the OP likes it.

But please... "insulting"??? Wanttogo FOUND herself insulted at every turn because she misread so much. The clear insults on this page were personal assaults and name-calling that went on without my participation. Please save the reprimands for Wantogobutidk, annhig, BritishCaicos, and the others who gleefully sling around terms like illiterate, demented, ignorant, aspergers...

I'm not a person of color, but I think clauser's comments are interesting: I too have been treated rudely in Europe (definitely the exception, though). One instance was by a person of a color. I don't think it was due to my skin color but rather simply because I was a tourist and not fluent in their language, currency and/or customs.

I wonder if women who have negative experiences while traveling because they are women, young or old, ever are asked or feel obliged to offer "proof" it was because they were women when they related their experiences. Most women can tell when they've been discriminated against as women, even when somebody doesn't use misogynist language in the situation.

People with dark skin color are put to an inquisition whenever they mention racism unless they can document it to the satisfaction of white people. It's just another expression of racism, actually -- and please don't now try to tell me you shouldn't be judged for asking questions. You have a problem!

or more (is everybody who needs all the details taking notes?)

I am not on the side of those who wish to go on verbally attacking people of color who ask about this.

sandralist: It is absolutely shameless to scare black American tourists away from Germany, Italy, Greece, Spain, and anywhere else in Europe. This is trash journalism and trash thinking; the real source of conflict (as it is in every country that gets inundated with immigrants from the 3rd world) is related to immigration policy - just as your posted sources correctly point out - and there is no history of anti-tourist-of-color violence to support the fear-mongering.

"Documentation" my backside. What documentation is there at all in that dw piece that black American tourists can expect to be harassed or attacked or even discriminated against?

If you go along with this convoluted rhetoric, you are in effect telling people like Wanttogobutidk to just stay in their place - which apparently is at home, somewhere near the back of the bus. Just let them sip from the drinking fountains of travel in their own back yard, is that it??

Europe is now a hotbed of racism. Complete Quatsch.

I think everyone should just stop commenting and let Fussgaenger have his moment. As I said earlier, I'll be sure to update about how my trip goes!

Regardless of all the above as a tourist of any color you should in main tourist cities at least and probably anyplace experience no overt racism or problems realted to it.

Does that mean some folks are not racist? No and every country has racists folks - the U.S. IME more than in any European country.

Put angst to rest.

"something I don't plan to waste time on again"

Why did I think that statement wouldn't stand true.

More trash reporting for you

Sandralist

"It's just another expression of racism, actually"

Is very true.

I would agree with the article in terms of the the high profile instances of blacks suffering racial abuse during sports events. Russian, Spanish and Italian teams have all been sanctioned for the racial abuse to which their fans have subjected opposing players. This has little bearing on what happens on the street but when 1000s of Spanish national soccer team behave in a certain, these individuals clearly live on the streets.

I'd also agree that both Germany and Britain have issues with small scale right wing organisations.

@sandralist
Reading the article of the Atlanta Blackstar regarding Greece and especially Athens, i have to say that it is absolutely true, i already mentioned it in my first post.

The good news is that Golden Dawn , that is responbible for supporting and even organizing these attacks faces a trial ( a unique case in Greek parliamentary history)which will start at the end of April.
