Areas of Rome
My husband and I are thinking about renting an apartment in Rome for a month. Are there neighborhoods that we should avoid?

Dear Osgowen,
Welcome to the forum. I have stayed in Trastevere, Campo de Fiore and Piazza Navona areas (in hotels). All are nice and within walking distance for most all you'd want to see. If you haven't tried yet, there is a search function here. If you type in Rome apartment rentals, it will bring up many old posts where people make specific recommendations. Forgive me if you know this already. With a month long rental, you may be looking for different criteria than those of us who stay a week or less. In additionn to this site, www.slowtrav.com offers reviews of many Rome apartment rentals. Best wishes, SusanEva |
Thank you SusanEva. I appreciate the info.

I lived in Rome for several months. The only area I would avoid is Testaccio. It is far away from most tourist hot-spots and it probably has the most crime in Rome. It also lacks the beauty of the rest of the city.

Also, I would recommend looking for an apartment in Trastevere. It is probably the best spot to get a sense of neighborhood Rome if you will be staying there for a month. Though it has some tourist destinations, it remains a mainly residential area with beautiful piazzas, churches, shops and great little restaurants. You can also walk across the Ponte Sisto to Campo de Fiori (about ten minutes) in the mornings to pick up fruit and vegetables for the day or week. I think you'll be truly immersed in life as a Roman staying in that wonderful section of the city.
