Area of Corvara
 

Hello:

My husband and I have been asked by some friends to join them at a timeshare in Italy - 3 km. from Corvara. They have to let the timeshare company know by midnite tonight if they want to book it, so needless to say, I don't have much time to do my research. So I am turning to you guys for help! Can anyone tell me what this area is like? Is it isolated? Is the driving easy? Do the mountains make it difficult to get around? What are the must-sees in this area? How long of a drive or train ride is it to Venice? I just want to make sure that this area would be a good base to see some of Northern Italy. Thanks for any info that could get me started.

Try the website www.dolomiti.it. Corvara is in a gorgeous area...we bypassed it on our way to San Cristina, ValGardena, by taking the route thru Arabba & Canazei (from A27).

My daughter went to Corvara with friends on a ski vacation, and apparently there are plenty of shops, etc. However, I think it is more of a destination, than a base for touring Northern Italy. The roads are ok but tiring to drive especially in the winter. Yes the mountainous roads have lots of switchbacks etc. Try Mappy for distances from Venice.

Chrisee - As Willy says, Corvara's a gorgeous area.

We've stayed in RCI timeshares in both Corvara and nearby La Villa-in-Badia. The Alta Badia area is an ideal base for touring the Dolomites as it's so central.

If you have a car I can suggest several lovely tours to see the best of the Dolomites.

The drive to Venice from Corvara is 3-4 hours.

Corvara is lovely--I've been to that area twice by choice, for hiking and mountain biking. "3 km" from Corvara could put you in any of several places---let me know if you find out exactly where. We stayed in Colfosco (up-vally from Corvara) and in Pedraces, down the valley. All are easily accessible by road, from Brunico. The upper end of the valley leads to Gardena Pass. The scenery all around is incredible---unlike anything you may have seen in the U.S. You can ride lifts up for some great rambles, or go for very challenging hikes or even the via ferrata (climbing paths). The food, although certainly influenced by Italy, is distinctively Tyrolian.

Can anyone recommend a b&b or apartments in Corvara. We are going to stay 5 days in Selva and 5 in Corvara and I found lots more choice in Selva which makes me think I must be missing some websites for accommodation. Would prefer to be slightly out of town. I must say I find the extensive use of pine panelling rather overpowering!We would prefer not to be in hotels.

Sorry - I should have said we are going in early September. I've just had a look on one of Steve's website suggestions and have had better results. Colfosco certainly looks a charming village. How difficult is the driving around there - is it non stop hair pin bends?

Sal - You can't go wrong with Corvara or Colfosco. The setting of these two villages is unbeatable.

Colfosco is on the Gardena Pass, Corvara is at the foot of two passes, so ... yes, there are plenty of hairpin bends :). But the roads are generally excellent.
