Area around Trastevere train station

Hi, I found an apartment in Rome one block from Trastevere Station (via degli Orti di Cesare), and three blocks from the Porta Portese market.

I've read reports (from Italian sources) that the area is dirty and full of criminals, prostitutes etc.

Any direct experience? Would you still recommend staying there?

Thank you.

Eric, were you hoping to stay in that area for some reason? There are so many apartments that have been reviewed here and on www.slowtrav.com so I was just wondering.

Sorry I cannot comment on that particular part of the neighborhood.

Hi Eric - No 'direct experience' of prostitutes :) - or criminals, I'm afraid ...

My only experience with that neighborhood was riding through it on the tram to and from the Trastevere train station. It is pretty far out from the central part of the city and the part of Trastevere most people want to tour. The flea market on sundays at Porta Portese is well-known.
We were warned about pickpockets on the tram but other than that no insights into the crime level.

I would look for an apartment in another more central location

Thanks for the replies. In the end we found another apartment in a more central location.
