Area around the Munich Central Train Station
 

Hi,
We're thinking of going on 5 night trip to Munich sometime in May. I was looking at hotels around the Central Train Station but I read that it's a rather seedy, rough area. Maybe not dangerous but not what I'd want as a tourist.
I'd like some feedback about this and suggestions of areas that won't be too far from the Central Train station. A stop or two on public transportation. Please don't suggest Marienplatz. The hotels are either booked for those dates or aren't suitable (very small rooms). We would also like a place with restaurants in the area, walking distance.

Try Sendlinger Tor, Isartor, or the Viktuellianmarkt.

Specifically: Hotel Blauer Bock and Hotel Am Markt at Viktuellianmarkt, Hotel Torbrau at Isartor, or Motel One at Sendlinger Tor.

I rather like the area around the Hauptbahnhof. Some call it seedy, I call it diverse. Never once felt unsafe there.

You could also look into Munich Ost - we used to stay there instead of at the Hauptbahnhof. Several hotel options around the Munich Ost station - Motel One, Marriott, Residence Inn, etc. And it's a straight shot to the airport from there. Just a short hop to Marienplatz too.

I've also stayed in Sendlinger Tor as suggested above (my favorite Indian restaurant is there) and agree its a good option too.

Thanks. I'm looking at the area north of the Central train station now. (Hotel New Orly, Hotel Admiral, Eurostars Central) Do you have anything to say about the area? The hotels you mentioned are either too expensive or booked for the dates that we're going to be there.

But if we're talking about the Eurostars Grand Central on the Maxvorstadt, it's relatively central and walking distance to Marienplatz and Karlsplatz (31 minute walk per Google maps, but also near a tram stop)

Hotel Admiral is only a 12 minute walk from Marienplatz

Hotel New Orly looks less convenient, as a 40 minute walk to Marienplatz, but there's probably an S-Bahn nearby

The nice thing about Munich is that if you're not walking distance from old town, you're most likely near a tram stop, or the U or S Bahn

Have you looked into all the Motel One locations? An inexpensive option in Munich, good breakfast, but rooms are small.

If their rates are high for your nights, that's an indication that you're traveling at a busy time, as they're usually quite reasonable. If Motel One is high, all of central Munich probably will be.

I agree with Melnq8.
I've never felt unsafe around the train station.
More importantly, pay attention to public transportation near your hotel - speficially proximity tram line or U or S bahn stop, and where those lines run....

We've stayed at the Motel One Sendlinger Tor and it's a good place.

When we came for Oktoberfest, and prices were pretty high all over, we stayed at the Leonardo hotel Olympiapark. It's on Dachauer Strasse, a fairly short tram ride from the Central Train Station. That worked out well and it was a nice hotel. The only downside was that breakfast is an extra fee and was expensive - but there are plenty of places in the local area to get a coffee and a little something.

A few years back we (2 adults, 2 teens) visited during a busy time when rates seemed high all over. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Munich City Center were pleased. It is literally right above a S-Bahn station, 5 minute ride to Marienplatz, 10 min to Hauptbahnhof and about 30 minutes to the airport. Not posh but certainly everything was clean and comfortable, staff friendly and efficient and breakfast good. They did not have a fitness center but had an arrangement with a nearby place for cheap entry for hotel guests.

I, single female traveler, stayed at the Marriott Courtyard near the train station. It was fine and I felt safe for the most part. Yes, it is a little seedy. The hotel was very good as well as their breakfast.

There's nothing seedy about the area around Munich Hbf. It's fine.

Tip: Have dinner at the fabulous Augustiner Keller, 9 minutes walk along the road with the Eden Wolff in it https://www.augustinerkeller.de/en (I'd book, it gets busy)
The Intercity hotel also gets good reviews.

I also think the area around the Munich Hbf is fine. Perhaps a bit diverse. Stayed at the Sofitel which is pleasant. Not too long of a walk to the Marienplatz or the Octoberfest venues. Convenient for transport to Salzberg, and tours of the area.
