I hear on the news tonight that the Queen said she didn't want to go because Charles and Camilla wanted a very quiet private wedding. She will attend the church reception afterward. Who knows...we can all speculate. I'm wondering if it's because she's head of the Church of England, defend the faith and all, and perhaps it's not appropriate. I think they are caught between the "real world"..divorces and such...and tradition. It's all veddy interesting.

I personally am shocked that the queen won't attend. It must be a great sacrifice for her, as I know how fond she is of attending most equestrian events.

Neil, you have a point about Americans considering royalty way back when. I guess we did! But my main point is, we don't have it, so it's not much of a concern. When I talked with those fans of Diana in 1999, on the anniversary of her death, I was genuinely surprised at how much the media there was still interested in her and all things royal. Even People magazine doesn't give her that much print. I also appreciate what milehigh has to say. They are *people*, just people. So often, we expect anyone with fame (or money, or beauty, or power) to act more wisely than we do. And when they don't, we say they should. People often get trapped in their roles, and make mistakes, whether they're royals, or presidents, or parents. What did that old pop song say? "Walk a mile in my shoes..."

Patrick LOL

Why is the Queen not going to attend? I don't get it? But then, I don't get most of this thread either

You're right, Merseyheart, it's not really a concern. You have your own problems, anyway, and so do we. The media needs sensational stories, the Royals oblige, and when they're not doing something stupid there's always an obliging politician's love nest to gleefully expose.

Apropos of AR's post, it seems that there may be an option to marry in a Scottish register office if all else fails - apparently this was what Princess Anne did. Her mother did attend that wedding. As a BBC correspondent noted, a family that's always prided itself on getting everything "just right" has managed to get everything "just wrong" this time. A right Royal cockup, you might say.

Just to be pedantic, Princess Anne married at Crathie Church in Scotland and not a registry office - but you are quite right that the "laws" on re-marrying in Scotland are different to the Church of England (and the Church in Wales for that matter, to which the incumbent Archbishop of Canterbury was a Bishop prior to "changing sides", as it were).
There is no way that the Queen does not realise what message she is sending out by declining to attending the wedding. There's no point trying to justify it by saying that she wants the wedding to remain discreet.

In our country -Canada- get the benefit of the monarchy (questionable though it is) with little of the cost. If we had to bear the costs that the Brits do of supporting the royals, including Liz's lot, I would go republican and abolish. They just are not worth it.

Seems to me that Charles has loved the same woman his entire life. He and Camilla look very happy. Is that wrong? The Queen won't go to the ceremoy -- so what? She'll attend the other wedding events. Again, is it wrong for Charles and Camilla to be happy?

(regarding Diana's boyfriend at the time of the crash: have you ever heard the Tim Wilson blurb? He says that if he had a billion dollars, he would have hired Richard Petty to drive him through Paris. There's somebody who can drive with motorcycles and flashbulbs around him.)

Neil, Outsourcing? LOL! Wasn't the bride an Australian? Could be the perfect answer.

Underhill, it deals with an aspect of European culture. I just skip threads that bore me.

Let's see now....If we take the Queen's decision not to attend the wedding as a signal that she disapproves of the marriage, then she seems to agree with most of the contributors to this post.

That set me wondering....is it at all possible that HRH is actually a secret Fodorite? After all she does do a heck of a lot of travelling. Maybe she has already posted on this thread under a secret screen name. I wonder who it could be?

Nah, it couldn't possibly be true.

Could it?

Good thought Jim!
There are a few Fodorites that might think like a Queen, or at least wish that they could shout Off with her/his head!

I really could not care less of Charles and his Mousy Lover.. the only thing that I know is that we cant find true happiness when we caused so much pain and sorrow to other to obtain it.

Scarlett,

I came very close to naming a few likely candidates, but stopped myself just in time
