Villa Rental in Tuscany

I am traveling with a group next summer (4 adults/4 children) and we want to rent a villa a a base in Tuscany for 1 week. Any recommendations on locations that are central to travel either by car or train to other destinations for day drips? Already been to Florence, Rome but other family we are traveling with has not but we might be separating after this 1 week to do our own excursions. We would go to North to Venice and they are looking to head South to Amalfi coast.

Bob, curious why you say not to try and stay by ourselves? Is there concerns you have experienced while traveling? (i.e. getting food, directions to places, being too remote?)
